Smallb> Faces (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Smallb> Faces was the first album by the British rock and roll group The Smallb> Faces.
An alternative version called There are But Four Smallb> Faces was released a few months later in the USA, but it contained a slightly altered track list.
Castle Communications released a combined version of the two albums on CD in 1997, it retained the original UK track listing, with the five USA tracks added at the end.

The Smallb> Faces - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Smallb> Faces were a British rock and roll band of the 1960s, led by Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane with Kenny Jones and original organist Jimmy Winston.
The Smallb> Faces were all genuine East End mods and they ranked a very close second to The Who as Britain's premier Mod band.
Critics raved, and the album sold well, but like The Beatles did with Sgt. Pepper, they were confronted by the practical problem that they had created a studio masterpiece which was all but impossible to recreate on the road.

Though it didn't appear on the original album, the new version of the Immediate "Smallb> Faces" album features their 1967 hit single "Itchycoo Park." This mocking look at the hippie movement was one of the first records to feature the surreal effect called phasing.

This, in turn, prevented Marriott and Lane from exploring their full potential as songwriters, and in 1966, with albums like Rubber Soul and Revolver emanating from the Beatles and Aftermath from the Rolling Stones, songwriting was becoming an essential activity for any band that could do it.
The Smallb> Faces were the best English band never to hit it big in America.
By the end of 1966, the Smallb> Faces had severed their ties with Arden which, in effect, ended their relationship with Decca (though the two sides would argue and debate that point for a while), and in early 1967 moved under the wing of Rolling Stones manager/producer Andrew Loog Oldham.

The Smallb> Faces : Smallb> Faces (Immediate) - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Smallb> Faces was the second LP of that name issued by the band in the space of a year, a fact that -- coupled with its release a year later in America in somewhat modified form as There Are But Four Smallb> Faces -- has always confused fans of the group's work.
This particular album was the Smallb> Faces' Immediate Records debut, and caught the group in the transition from an R&B-based mod band into a psychedelic-oriented outfit.
Some of the music lacks the kind of polish that the group would bring to subsequent projects, but Smallb> Faces was still a major leap forward for the group, as far in front of their 1966 album of the same name as, say, Rubber Soul was from Help!

The Smallb> Faces Biography
Their first Immediate album, entitled Smallb> Faces (known in the U.S., where it was released somewhat belatedly through Columbia Records' distribution, as There Are But Four Smallb> Faces), was issued in mid-1967, and was an instant hit.
By the end of 1966, the Smallb> Faces had severed their ties with Arden which, in effect, ended their relationship with Decca (though the two sides would argue and debate that point for a while), and in early 1967 moved under the wing of Rolling Stones manager/producer Andrew Loog Oldham.
Ironically, although they were always glad to have a hit, the bandmembers weren't entirely pleased with the single's success, because they felt the song didn't represent their true sound, and it was also extremely difficult to play on-stage, owing to its acoustic guitar sound and varied musical textures.

Much like the early Who, Smallb> Faces had an exuberance that threatened to detonate the band's songs but instead kept the players rolling forward with unrelenting fervor.
Those who are only familiar with Smallb> Faces from the band's later incarnation as the Rod Stewart-fronted Faces should look into SMALLb> FACES for an earful of how it all began.

With only one song released in America, the Smallb> Faces were a little English band with a really catchy hook to a single called ‘Itchycoo Park‘.
Starting it all is the Smallb> Faces’ only single, ‘Itchycoo Park’ which has some very fun acoustic guitar playing, with a four note hook that ‘Baba O’Reiley’ is jealous of.
There Are But Four Smallb> Faces, said to be the band’s best album, which features awesome drumming throughout the entire duration, is catchy beyond belief.

The Smallb> Faces
The talented songwriting team of Marriott and Lane was also a key component in The Smallb> Faces' listenability, perhaps not in writing original lyrics, but in creating inventive melodies that went beyond the blues and soul chestnuts that groups with lesser writers were condemned to.
While Townsend's guitar work could become metallic, and eventually acoustic sounding at times, The Smallb> Faces kept a growly, almost early-Kinks style guitar sound with extra depth and a more soulful sound thanks to McLagan's keyboard and heavy bass by Lane.
The Smallb> Faces could out-cool just about any of their contemporaries of the mid-60s, and produced some of the most soulful r&b of the era as well.

Smallb> Faces Reviews
I may be off a little, but I believe this was the first album the Smallb> Faces made as a concrete album, and it shows: this contains the flaky excitement and energy of a band let loose for an extended period in the studio for the first time.
I don't have this one, but everything indicates that this one isn't worth purchasing: the Smallb> Faces switched labels before recording this album, which means that there's a lot of confusing overlap with this release (on Immediate) with the succeeding From the Beginning (on Decca).

The Smallb> Faces
Naturally, since this is a psycho album, the Smallb> Faces pile everything on top of it - the music is just as diverse, colourful and variegated as the album cover.
The American version, in order to avoid being confused with the band's Decca debut, was retitled There Are But Four Smallb> Faces, contained 12 songs instead of 14, and, as usual, contained all the wrong ones, dusting a handful of album tracks off the table in favour of "well known" singles of the period.
Nothing surprising about that, either, as the Smallb> Faces were the Who's main rivals throughout Mod clubs; having, however, arrived on the scene just a wee bit too late - and in the mid-Sixties, you could be late by ten days, let alone a whole month - they couldn't get rid of the bandwagon-jumping tag.
