Slim Gaillard - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bulee "Slim" Gaillard (January 4, 1911 or 1916 - February 26, 1991) was an American jazz singer, songwriter, pianist, and guitarist, noted for his scat singing and wordplay.
Unlike them, he was a master improviser whose stream of consciousness vocals ranged far afield from the original lyrics along with wild interpolations of nonsense syllables like "McVouty oreeney".
His 1945 session with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie is notable, both musically and for its relaxed convivial air.

 Slim Gaillard Laughing in Rhythm
Slim Gaillard the musician was a master of guitar and piano and voice, equally as entertaining as he was authoritative.
Gaillard was in the studio often, parodying the crooners, cutting swing music incorporating Cuban, Yiddish, boogie woogie, and many other elements.
Gaillard, however, stood in front of the microphone and the audience and boldy and deftly sang songs unlike almost any before.

 The Bartender's Review
Slim Gaillard's style could be called "jive" vocals, as he uses many of the slang terms of the 40's in his songs.
On the recording, in addition to the lead and backup vocals, he plays the trumpet, trombone, tenor sax, piano, organ, bass and drums.
He broke into show business in 1930 as a guitar player who also tap-danced at the same time.

 Slim Gaillard Biography
Not surprisingly, given his manner of performance and his private language, some people never quite understood Gaillard and one radio station banned his record 'Yep Roc Heresy', declaring it to be degenerate; in fact, the lyric was merely a recitation of the menu from an Armenian restaurant.
In the 1960s he was largely outside of music, running a motel in San Diego, but by the late '70s Slim Gaillard was back on a part-time basis, still singing "Flat Foot Floogie" and making one wonder why this comic whiz was neglected for nearly three decades.
He also cut a session with bop greats Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie in late 1945, the most notable result of which was "Slim's Jam." The latter half of the ‘40s saw Gaillard's popularity at its peak; he appeared in several films and recorded for Verve up through 1951.

Bubblegum pop - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bubblegum rock is also reminiscient of pre-rock novelty songs such as "Abba Dabba Honeymoon" and "The Hut Sut Song," which hit the charts in the late 1940s, and hipster foolishness like Slim Gaillard's "Cement Mixer (Puti Puti)".
Essentially, Bubblegum pop evolved from rock and roll and the other popular American musical forms that preceded and accompanied it, such as rhythm and blues and doo-wop.
Seminal rock and roll numbers, such as Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti" with its nonsense rhyming couplets (replacing the original vulgar lyrics), also influenced what would come later.

January 12th, 2005 02:53 PM I've been a SG fan for years, but only relatively recently discovered that he did the original version of "Down by the Station," now mostly known as a children's song and one that my girls love to sing.
I haven't heard that one, but I have heard almost all other Slim recordings and really enjoy them.

 From 'On The Road'
Slim Gaillard is a tall, thin Negro with big sad eyes who's always saying 'Right-orooni' and 'How 'bout a little bourbon-arooni.' In Frisco great eager crowds of young semi-intellectuals sat at his feet and listened to him on the piano, guitar and bongo drums.
Slim said, 'There you go-orooni.' Now Dean approached him, he approached his God; he thought Slim was God; he shuffled and bowed in front of him and asked him to join us.

In Frisco great eager crowds of semi-intellectuals sat at his feet and listened to him on the piano, guitar and bongo drums.
Beginning in 1937 guitarist Bulee "Slim" Gaillard and bassist Leroy "Slam" Stewart worked together for a number of years under the label of "Slim and Slam." Among works of theirs that disassembled and reassembled language were "Flat Foot Floogie (with a floy-floy)" and "Bassology," as presented here.
In filling in the history of experimental soundings in the modernist "west," attention can now be given to a range of artists working within jazz and other alternative traditions.

 Robert Christgau: CG: Slim Gaillard
Although this 20-song collection from the '50s relegates "Flat Foot Floogie" to a medley and passes over "Cement Mixer (Put-Ti, Put-Ti)" and "Tutti Frutti" (o-rooney?), it swings and yucks whether the song is a remake, a new stroke, or a piece of Tin Pan Alley silliness.
Operating so far to the left of Louis Jordan that he often passed as a weirdo, Gaillard stands as jazz's premier comedian-eccentric, the hepcat as novelty artist to end all novelty artists.
Gaillard laughed in rhythm, barked in rhythm, clucked like a chicken in rhythm; he made up his own language, then adapted it to Spanish, Hebrew, Arabic, Incan; he was so fond of the suffix "rooney" (as in "You got the federation blues-o-rooney") that when introduced to Mickey Rooney he asked what his last name was.
