His singing has very noticeably improved and matured with every album, and with his broad vocal style that can manage anything from hardcore to ballads coupled with the haunting elegance of his lyrics, there is not a single moment on the CD which isn't pure rapture to listen to.
Sing the Sorrow was the album that got me into AFI, it may not be a great one to start with, since it doesn't really sound like AFI's old CDs, but it's definitly my favourite one.
The newest AFI album "Sing the Sorrow" starts with the intro song "Miseria Cantare - The Beginning", which is a sort of chanting song like "Strenght through wounding", and is very atmospheric.

Whatever factions of the band's longterm fans might think of their major-label affiliation, Sing the Sorrow represents a coalescing of the band's sound.
Vig and Finn kept the band's nucleus of pummeling California hardcore but stretched the songs lengthwise to incorporate greater lyrical introspection for Havok and even more attention to melody than on previous efforts.

InternetEd Reviews: A.F.I.- Sing The Sorrow
Overall, A.F.I.& Sing The Sorrow is a great punk rock hybrid album with lots of melody and consistently solid songwriting throughout.
Sing The Sorrow shows its pop/Goth-ish influences immediately on the sparse orchestral punk intro titled “Miseria Cantare” and the ultra-melodic “The Leaving Song Pt.
Undoubtedly some people will label A.F.I. as a sellout for their recent musical facelift, but more open-minded fans will find Sing The Sorrow to be a thoroughly enjoyable and well-written album.

A.F.I.: Sing the Sorrow Aversion.com Review
Sing the Sorrow isn?t a Goth album, by any means: If you?re searching for dismal and gloomy tracks stick to the Joy Division or Sisters of Mercy, but it?s certainly a darker affair than most fans of spit-polished punk are expecting.
Sing the Sorrow picks up right where A.F.I. left off, and defines the band as a survivor of the punk-rock midlife crisis that hits bands after a few years.
It?s a fitting image change for the rocker, as with Sing the Sorrow his band bids goodbye to the final remnants of its punk-rock past.

In Music We Trust - AFI: Sing The Sorrow
Marked with eerie intros and forbidding chants, "Sing The Sorrow" possesses the combined effect of pain and perseverance all in one forward motion, where pride and progression maintain an equidistant measure of respect for the other and in the end, everybody wins.
Indeed, one of the Bay Area's finest Punk bands arrives about six months out of season for their "sorrowful" new release, which in spite of its dark wanderings, is as much a breeding ground for rejoice and renewal.
Individually, AFI lends merit to the idea of allegiance in musicality and in kind, opts to fill little space with artfully prescient subtleties that associate rather than dominate, in unifying a Gothic/Punk/Metal sound that few have capably delivered until now.

Credit the band for sticking to their 10-years-and-counting vision on Sing the Sorrow, an album that illuminates a viable third avenue for modern rock.
Given that, it's no surprise to find the producers maintaining the band's established gloomy hardcore/pop aesthetic while stretching the songs longer to create more opportunities to showcase the band's dark lyrics and musicianship.
In today's cookie-cutter modern rock radio work, failure to conform to either of these styles often leaves a band on the outside looking in.
