 Liberty Records Story
If you look at the first 100 or so album releases on Liberty, you can see that Si Waronker was recording the music he new best: big band music, movie music, orchestral music and some jazz.
Waronker contacted jazz artist Bobby Troup in 1955 to try to sign him to the label, but Troup was still under contract to another record company.
The first releases on the label were lush orchestral recordings by Lionel Newman.

A Record Executive's Pride and Joy / Warner Bros. re-releases Lenny Waronker's early masterpieces
Waronker set about assembling a selection of songs by such writers as the then-little-known Merle Haggard, Newman and Ron Elliott of the Beau Brummels, and fashioning behind the Everlys a modern country-rock sound that presaged the fascination with this hybrid by other West Coast bands like the Byrds and Poco.
Waronker started at Warners with the mission of making Top 40 hits for a label almost entirely absent from that lucrative field, and he struck paydirt shortly thereafter with Harper's Bizarre (``Feelin' Groovy'') and the Mojo Men (``Sit Down, I Think I Love You,'' written by the young Stephen Stills).
Intertwining pieces of the old Everly family radio show, featuring Don and Phil Everly as children, Waronker stitched together an autobiographical album that remains one of the finest moments in the long and illustrious recording career of the great singing duo.

 dallasobserver.com The music man 1998-12-10
Waronker likes to tell how Rickie Lee Jones nearly broke down during the recording of her first album, how she was nothing but a songwriter "off the street" who didn't know her way around the studio and thought Waronker and co-producer Russ Titleman were manipulating her.
Waronker began as a junior A&R exec at the label in 1966 and eventually became its president, signing and/or producing no less than a roster that includes Randy Newman, Rickie Lee Jones, Elvis Costello, R.E.M., James Taylor, Ry Cooder, Gordon Lightfoot, and Eric Clapton.
Lenny is the son of Simon "Sy" Waronker, a musician and a music-industry executive--a violinist who forever locked his instrument in its case when he founded his very own label and discovered there was gold (and platinum) to be made in selling pop records.

Alvin and the Chipmunks - InformationBlast
Created by Ross Bagdasarian in 1958, Alvin and the Chipmunks is a fictional musical group consisting of three singing chipmunks —Alvin, Simon, and Theodore—who are "managed" by their human "dad" and leader, David "Dave" Seville.
Theodore: He is the child of innocence, He is shy, loving, sensitive, gullible, trusting, and native.
Alvin and the Chipmunks first appeared on the scene in a novelty record released in 1958 by Ross Bagdasarian.

Simon, Paul: Heats and Bones (Warner Bros. Records Inc., 1983.10.01)
Musically, Simon moved forward and backward simultaneously, taking off from the jazz fusion style of his last two albums into his old loves of doo wop and rock & roll while also incorporating current sounds with such new collaborators as dance music producer Nile Rodgers and minimalist composer Philip Glass.
Hearts and Bones was meant, for a while, to be a Simon and Garfunkel album.

 Randy Newman
Though his output of recorded music is somewhat sporadic, owing largely to his innate perfectionism, Newman has had great effect on pop music and those influenced by him include Lyle Lovett Paul Simon, and Mark Knopfler.
Stylistically, his music runs the gamut from classically-influenced film scores, to R&B-type pop, to haunting ballads and most of all, to his upbeat subtly orchestrated, shuffling amalgam of New Orleans jazz and ragtime.
Newman 's contributions to film scoring have also been large and in 1995, he earned Oscar nominations for Best Song and Best Original Musical or Comedy score for his work in Toy Story (1995).

Guestbook for the Band WWW pages, January 2002
Simon will no doubt recall that the album's title comes from the song "Libby" which she wrote for her friend Libby Titus.
Off the bat, I couldn't think of a Band connection, but Van Dyke Parks did help out on Carly Simon's 1976 album, "Another Passenger".
Eventhough it took a few years before their albums caught on, the compnay had faith in the music and NOT dollar signs in their eyes.

 Joey Waronker pictures and biography
Joey, 32, is the grandson of professional violinist Simon Waronker who in the 1950s founded Liberty Records, which counted Eddie Cochran, Bobby Vee and Johnny Burnette among its artists.
With a family tree rooted in the music industry, perhaps he was destined to carry on the tuneful tradition.
Joey's mother meanwhile, recorded some pop tunes under the name Donna Loren, and appeared in beach party movies in the '60s.

 Simon Philips pictures and biography
An innovative, aggressive drummer, Simon Phillips embarked on his musical career at an early age.
He showed affinity for the drums quickly — beginning with a toy kit at age four, moving on to a snare and cymbal set at six; by age 12, Phillips was performing and recording with his father's Dixieland jazz band.

Los Angeles Business Journal: Struggling Record Label at DreamWorks Turns to Net - Brief Article
After a handful of moderate successes, the DreamWorks Records label finally has one artist edging into the top 10 albums on the Billboard charts.
According to Simon, the label's principals -- Michael Ostin, Mo Ostin, Lenny Waronker and Michael Goldstone -- believe that developing promising artists is more important than capitalizing on the latest music trend.
"We're trying to position ourselves as a progressive record label, and this is another step toward doing that," said Jed Simon, head of new media for DreamWorks Records.

 Mondo Chipmunk-O
Alvin, Simon and Theodore are dressed as X-Files agents on the cover, and on the CD Alvin and Chipette Britanny are Mulder and Scully (or as they are called, "Moldy" and "Scuzzy") doing not-so-funny shtick around the "X-Files" theme music.
Actually, this adds "The Chipmunk Song," which is an interesting song to cover because you have to say the names Alvin, Simon and Theodore in the lyrics!
Alvin, Simon, Theodore and the label must have loved these songs, though, because they appear again three years later on their movie tribute album.

Among the musicians who appear on the record are Red Hot Chili Pepper John Frusciante, Beck's guitarist Smokey Hormel, Billy Preston, drummer Joey Waronker (R.E.M.), Benmont Tench and Mike Campbell of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and bluegrass/country pickers Randy Scruggs and Marty Stuart.

Randy Newman bio: From Mozart to Metric
Lenny, whose father, Simon Waronker, was founder and then board chairman at Liberty Records (and the inspiration for the Chipmunks character Simon) steered Randy to a contact at Metric Music, Liberty's publishing house in Hollywood.
In 1960, sixteen year-old Randy was urged by his childhood friend (and future producer) Lenny Waronker to get a job writing songs ("He didn't want to see all this musical education go to waste without a practical result").
It was totally unexpected then, when some vocal support came from a patient of Randy's father -- one Pat Boone, top artist for Dot Records.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum : Hall of Fame : Inductee Detail
One of the finest record men of the rock and roll era, Ostin was lured from Verve Records by Frank Sinatra to run his Reprise label.
Under Ostin’s leadership, Warner Bros. and its affiliated labels, including Reprise Records, launched or furthered the careers of such visionary artists as Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Van Morrison, the Grateful Dead, Frank Zappa, Fleetwood Mac, James Taylor, Randy Newman, Jimi Hendrix, the Kinks, Ry Cooder, and Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band.
It’s been written that “by the early 1970s, Warner Bros. and Reprise had become the unofficial arbiters of musical taste.” An accountant by training, Ostin displayed uncommon empathy for the non-quantifiable artistic temperament.

The show still had song segments, but Clyde Crashcup didn't make it into the new incarnation.

Simon was characterized as good at what he does, a fast learner, and well aware of the fact.

the guy with The Chipmunks." And that's perhaps understandable since, with the release of The Chipmunk Song in late 1958, he commenced a whole new career with the three tiny characters he named Alvin, Simon, and Theodore after Liberty Records executives Alvin Bennett, Simon Waronker, and Theodore Keep.

Feelin' Groovy: The Best of Harpers Bizarre by Harpers Bizarre: Album Reviews
Harpers Bizarre, the sunshine pop quintet led by future superstar producer Ted Templeman, has always been dismissed by the uninformed.
Based on the fact that Harpers Bizarre's only really big hit was a choral version of Paul Simon's "The 59th Street Bridge Song," which producer/mastermind Lenny Waronker buffed to a lollipop shine, generations of critics have either mocked or (much more often) ignored the group.

iMusic Contemporary Showcase - Martin Denny on the ARTISTdirect Network
The track "The Enchanted Sea" was initially released as a single in September of 1959.
When Liberty producer Simon Waronker first visited this setting he was so impressed that he declared "Martin, this is the enchanted sea and that will be the name of your next recording!"
When the incoming waves broke against the cliff, the spray would fall into a man-made splash swimming pool that had been dug from a lava rock basin.

Their animation makeover created a kinder and gentler image for the trio, who were named after Liberty Records' Al Bennett (Alvin), Si Waronker (Simon), and the staff recording engineer/producer Ted Keep (Theodore).
Before the TV show, Alvin, Simon, and Theodore were visually represented by realistic looking puppets and drawings.
The program had a great impact on the distinctive look and subsequent persona that the Chipmunks' would continue with for decades to follow.

They were named for three Liberty records executives.
From the Both Sides Now site: "The Chipmunks were wryly named for Liberty executives Alvin Bennett, Simon Waronker, and Theodore Keep." I found that taking a 33 RPM recording of theirs and slowing it to 16 RPM did the trick.
To my ears, not only was it Bagdasarian, but he didn't seem to change his voice for of them.
