 Lush
Lush was a British shoegazing band, formed in 1988 by Steve Rippon, Emma Anderson, Meriel Barham, Chris Acland and Miki Berenyi (see 1988 in music).
Critical praise for Scar and a wildly popular live show established Lush as one of the best-selling bands in the new "shoegazing" genre of pop music.
Robin Guthrie helped the band sign to 4AD and released Scar, an EP, in 1989 (1989 in music).

Shoegazing When The Floor Was Limit Guitar Columns @ Ultimate-Guitar.Com
Shoegazing spat in the face of these over-enthusiastic shredders, with dual rhythm guitars being used in most key bands.
They were dubbed Shoegaze, due to the current wave of British bands using heavily distorted guitars, and soft, hushed vocals not different to those by Bilinda Butcher, which created a strange contrast between harsh and abrasive, and calm and tranquil.
The name 'Shoegazing' was coined by the music press due to the guitarists habit of staring at downwards, at their shoes or effects pedals.

Opus // Music Reviews // Various Artists - Feedback To The Future: A Compilation Of Eleven Shoegazing Songs From ...
In my humble opinion, no shoegazing comp would ever be complete without a track from Slowdive (quite possible the most perfect band to ever grace God's green earth), and the comp features one of their finest songs.
I've often identified shoegazing as a more introspective music, perfect for those times and moods when you want music that'll embrace you as you brood or pine away for a bit.
Of course, the lyrics are pure shoegazer, full of pining and youthful romanticism, but overall, the track almost sounds like prototypical Britpop (which just supports my conspiracy theory that all of the popular British rock of the past 15 years would never have existed if not for this oft-derided genre).

The key to shoegazing music is a loose feel with a jangly guitar quality.
The shoegazing bands were singled out as pretentious, middle-class, art-school, etc. etc., and most of them heavily re-invented themselves.
But despite the denials and prejudices, shoegazing has been allowed to live on, with fewer guitars, in the guise of Trip-Hop.

BBC - collective - Much Maligned Music: No. 1
Shoegazing brought back to British rock music the concept of the 'Epic' rock track, a prime example being the rise of The Verve - 'Slide Away' and 'She's A Superstar' owe heavily to the Shoegazing scene.
A group of hip-young gunslingers, predominantly from the Home Counties, plugged in their guitars, cranked up the dials and made rock epics that, in what was a time of musical sterility, made some pretty bold statements.
Ride, without a doubt, were THE Shoegazing band - their early poppier sound, as defined by 'Chelsea Girl' slowly developed into something much more grandiose - 'Like A Daydream', 'Taste' and Shoegazing Track In Excelsis 'Leave Them All Behind' left all the other bands of the Shoegazing creed in their wave.

Shoegaze is a genre of late '80s and early '90s British indie rock, named after the bands' motionless performing style, where they stood on stage and stared at the floor while they played.
Arguably the leading album of the "Shoegazing" movement is 'Loveless' - My Bloody Valentine.

Swervedriver weren't out to destroy the pop song (which was arguably the whole point of shoegazing), but ultimately, they achieved something far more controversial by inverting the relationship, by dragging the inherent pretensions of the shoegazing into the pop song.
MBV's masterpiece was a work of profound sonic genius, redefining both the structure of song and the accepted norms of guitar music.

CONFESSIONS OF A MUSIC SNOB: Shoegazing to My Bloody Valentine
More optimistically, shoegaze was about experimenting with the sonic texture of the electric guitar rather than simply assaulting the listener’s ears.
My Bloody Valentine had already shaped the musical landscape of Britain with their previous full-length album “Isn’t Anything.” With electric guitars that sounded alternately like an air raid siren and a sinister blender, the album helped inspire a rock movement whose main signature was waves of distortion and feedback.
Someone could argue that their music was as alienating to their audience as their performance style was.

All Music Guide: Shoegazing is a genre of late '80s and early '90s British indie rock, named after the bands' motionless performing style, where they stood on stage and stared at the floor while they played.
In 1992 — after the groups had dominated the British music press and indie charts for about three years — the shoegazing groups were swept aside by the twin tides of American grunge and Suede, the band to initiate the wave of Britpop that ruled British music during the mid-'90s.
Each band offered up 2-4 true-to-the-original songs from their Shoegazer mix tapes.

 The Lost Generation: Pitchfork Feature
And Th' Faith Healers, one of the earliest bands on the label, sounded midway between an American indie band (Pavement, Dinosaur Jr.) and a shoegazer act, a combination that left them plenty of room to move; "Don't Jones Me", their best-remembered single, sounds a bit like PJ Harvey in psych mode.
This was the original indie band that didn't want to be an indie band-- if anything, they wanted to be Aphex Twin, and just happened to bring their indie sensibilities with them.
From today's viewpoint, their method of combining the two things seems blindingly obvious: Wisps of shoegazer guitar and vocal, drifting and floating over the slow roll of breakbeats, something not entirely unlike Andy Weatherall's groundbreaking dance remix of My Bloody Valentine's "Soon".

Von (Smekkleysa, 1997 - One Little Indian, 2004) was an album of conventional psychedelic rock that already emphasized the most haunting qualities of the sound of Pink Floyd, Gong, Cocteau Twins and My Bloody Valentine.
Very little happens in these "songs", but the mood is unusually mystical for a rock band, something that borders on Pink Floyd's A Saucerful Of Secrets, PIL's Albatros, Klaus Schulze's Irrlicht, Arvo Part's chamber music, Raphael's new age music, My Bloody Valentine's shoegazing technique and Tibetan mantras.

The band's newfound authority also comes across on "Antiphon," a textured, driving instrumental that could almost be a lost track from PiL's Metal Box, largely due to Spigel's lumbering, juddering bass (one of the common sonic denominators on many of Profile's tracks).
Profile is a more fully realized exploration of the interface between organic and electronic musics that shows Githead expanding its range and developing a distinctive sound.
A more mature, assured feel is evident on the opener, "Alpha," whose densely layered wall of shoegazing guitars infuses the sound with a harder edge and a gravitas at which Headgit only hinted.
