Shakuhachi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The sound of the shakuhachi is also featured in western genres of music, including smooth jazz and rock music, especially after being commonly shipped as a "preset" instrument on various synthesizers and keyboards beginning in the 1980s.
Their songs (called "koten honkyoku") were paced according to the players' breathing and were considered meditation as much as music (suizen).
Professional players can produce virtually any note they wish from the instrument, and play a wide repertoire of original zen music, ensemble music with koto, biwa and shamisen, folk music, jazz and other modern pieces.

 Newsletter - 5/18/04 - Shakuhachi Zen Flute
The Shakuhachi is the simplest of musical instruments, but in the hands of a master musician however, the flute is capable of an imeasurable variety of dynamics and timbre.
Shakuhachi music uses many notes which do not fall within the standard western musical temperment.
There are many kinds of Shakuhachi music one can practice ranging from honkyoku (original Zen solo pieces) to sankyoku (ensemble music), to minyou (folk music), to classical, jazz, and blues.

 History of the Shakuhachi
As such, the shakuhachi was not considered a musical instrument but a religious tool.
From this period until as late as the 12th century it was used in gagaku (court music).
What resulted from this practice was a large body of music called honkyoku (original music).

The music is just hauntingly beautiful. The music of the shakuhachi and the koto do not compete for dominance but just complement and blend with each other so well.

 PLAYING HONKOKU; PRAYING HONKYOKU
At this time, the element of "entertainment" became part of shakuhachi music, such as Minyo (folk music), Shinkyoku (modern, new music), and Sankyoku (referring to music played with three instruments: koto, shamisen [sangen], and shakuhachi).
The Classical Honkyoku are for solo shakuhachi; therefore, harmony does not enter in, the same as for the lyric melody.
Hearing a Buddhist sutra chanted at a funeral there is, perhaps, a striking similarity to the sound and character of the Kinko School Honkyoku.

John Singer, master shakuhachi teacher, performer, recording artist and former shakuhachi instructor at the University of Hawaii, has performed music on the Japanese bamboo flute since 1975.
Though simple in appearance, the shakuhachi is very difficult to play; its magical quality is revealed to the listener by the purity of its tone.
John also specializes in the performance of traditional Japanese ensemble music where the shakuhachi is combined with the stringed instruments called the Koto and Shamisen.

Although the pieces recorded on this CD are all of solo shakuhachi music, the instrument is also frequently featured in ensembles.
The sounds heard in the most traditional shakuhachi music (honkyoku, literally ‘basic’ or ‘original’) are usually not so much melodies in the Western sense of the word as they are a carefully composed series of short motives, phrases, and pitch cells played in a highly flexible rhythm and sometimes seperated by long rests.
They have six finger holes and we apparently used in court ensemble music.

 Chikuzen Studios: About The Shakuhachi
The capacity of the Shakuhachi is huge, not only as a musical instrument due to its variety of colors and special sounds, but, more so as a link or bridge between the essential nature (soul) of human beings and the essential nature (spirit) of the cosmos.
Shakuhachi music comes out of these places for me now: the expansive fields, the rolling hills, and the cloudy skies bearing the thunderstorms of the Midwest.
The instrument they used and the music they played on it reflects the thoughts and feelings of their lives, and can still be useful and powerful tools today for anyone drawn to the contemplation of man's inner nature through sound.

The long term effects of this recording can be measured more than in just the lifetimes of the master and his disciples; it was one of the examples of world music included in the cargo of the Voyager II spacecraft sent into the far reaches of outerspace in 1977.
