 Sepultura - Death Metal
The musical style is more akin to classical than to classic metal; Sepultura handily avoids the trap of trying to "sound like a metal band" at the expense of originality, creating instead an musical smorgasbord of industrial-tribal art.
A first listen to this CD proves that the same drive to music with weight behind the order of its impact that, mixed with innovation that characterized Sepultura's earlier work, dominates this disk in a similar way to to its foundational genesis of other albums.
For this intensity and individualism this album rewarded its creators and listeners alike with a testament to the metallic spirit that does not age with time but holds forth its celebrative fusion of angst and joy of life for all ages to learn from.

Sepultura: Roorback - PopMatters Music Review
Sepultura's decline was noticeable, as their album sales paled in comparison to those of Cavalera's Soulfly, and the nadir of their illustrious history had to have been when the band found themselves without an American record label after their 2001 album Nation.
Sepultura bravely decided to soldier on, replacing Cavalera with American vocalist Derrick Green, but much like when Blaze Bayley took over as singer for Iron Maiden in the mid-'90s, the resulting albums, while not awful by any stretch, were still nowhere near as great as their predecessors.
However, Sepultura is a band who still knows how to transcend the limitations of that sludgy sound better than anyone, and on Roorback, they prove they're more than capable of providing some thrilling moments on an album.

Sepultura’s musicality stands worlds apart in the late 90s, and its influential drive is therefore certain to fuel the pop engines of the twenty-first century.
South American band Sepultura came into existence in 1984, and it was against the backdrop of Brazil’s south-eastern city of Belo Horizonte that the childhood dreams of brothers Max and Igor Cavalera were finally realized, essentially animated by combining the rhythmic force of the region and external heavy rock nuances.
Andrián Pertout speaks to drummer Igor Cavalera and Sepultura’s new vocalist Derrick Green about the birth of the band, and their latest album ‘Against’.

Roots marked Sepultura's creative peak, and the band's continual rise to ever-greater fame seemed guaranteed until a family tragedy set off a series of events which would break up the band.
After landing a deal with independent Cogumelo Records, Sepultura recorded four songs for a split LP with fellow Brazilians Overdose.
The introduction of native Brazilian percussion and musical styles into their trademark down-tuned guitars and increasingly sociopolitical themes resulted in a highly unique record which could be loosely described as heavy metal world music.
