Roy Acuff - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Acuff spent most of the 1950s and 1960s touring constantly, becoming one of the hottest tickets in country music.
Acuff became a regular on the Grand Ole Opry in 1938, forming a backing band called the Smoky Mountain Boys, led by friend and Dobro player Bashful Brother Oswald.
By the 1970s Acuff performed almost exclusively with the Grand Ole Opry, at Opryland USA, greatly legitimizing it as the top institution in country music.

 Roy Acuff Biography
Acuff was born in 1903 in Maynardsville, Tennessee, the third of five children in a family that loved music.
He followed that with a national tour, recording in 1940 in Dallas and then moving to Hollywood to be in the movie, "Grand Ole Opry," which began a movie career alongside his music.
However, listeners were excited about this new fiddle and vocal talent and he scored radio spots and concert appearances with the popular Delmore Brothers.

Roy Acuff, "King of the Hillbillies," "Backwoods Sinatra," "Caruso of Mountain Music," sold more records than any other country star in the '30s and '40s.
Acuff continued recording and performing on the Opry well into the 1990s.
As his popularity grew, Acuff eliminated the "progressive" members of his band- those who advocated the crooning and jazz influences- and replaced the pop-oriented and risqué love songs.

Acuff's tremendous contribution to country music was recognized in November 1962, when he became the first living musician to be honored as a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame.
During the '40s, Acuff's recordings became so popular that he headed Frank Sinatra in some major music polls and reportedly caused Japanese troops to yell 'To hell with Roosevelt, to hell with Babe Ruth, to hell with Roy Acuff' as they banzai-charged at Okinawa.
He guested on the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's triple album set "Will The Circle Be Unbroken?" in 1972, lending credence to contemporary and country-rock music.

 Roy Acuff
"The Great Roy Acuff" collects 12 songs which were intended for release as singles and were almost all written by the Acuff-Rose songwriters.
Acuff handled lead vocals (and kazoo on the pleasingly silly "Sixteen Chickens and a Tamborine," from "The Voice of Country Music").
The title is extremely apt, as Roy is at his hillbilly best here, showing how he won first the title "King of the Hillbillies," and then later, refined to "King of Country Music." None of these singles charted for the King, and even by 1953 there was a dated quality to them.

Rockzilla.net Roy Acuff "The Good News According to Mr. Roy Acuff" by William Michael Smith
Acuff was never a fan of ornate productions and the only flourishes included here are the occasional backing vocals by a "choir" most likely made up of Nashville/Opry regulars (I swear I can hear Grandpa Jones's voice in there!).
Despite having been a hit for Hank Williams, "I Saw The Light" became one of Acuff's signatures and it is absolutely fitting that this compilation begins with an energized roof-raising version that is good-timey and spirit lifting the way gospel country music ought to be.
If Acuff's versions of "Precious Memories" and "The Precious Jewel" (with its famous signature opening "Way back in the hills/when a boy I once wondered" and Oswald's masterful dobro work) don't get you where you live, you either haven't heard them or you aren't a fan of country music.

Culling thousands of songs he wrote (and claimed to have written) under the umbrella of mammoth publishing house Acuff-Rose, he and songwriter Fred Rose for a time were co-owners of just about every song identified with Nashville, from Hank Williams to the Everly Brothers.
Acuff became an overnight sensation when he played the now classic "The Great Speckled Bird" on the Opry in 1938, introducing America to his characteristically intense vocal style -- a style that left an indelible mark on country music.
