More than than the Man in Black image, it's the substance of Cash's music that make him one of the greatest musical figures of the past 50 years--the resonance of his deep voice, the driving beat of his simple, powerful songs, the fighting spirit of his lyrics, and his commitment to social justice.
Johnny Cash left this world on September 12, 2003, but he left behind songs that charts the highs and lows of the human experience, and that speak to Americans young and old.
Cash is the essential tribute to the Man in Black from Rolling Stone, a magazine that has long chronicled the life, career, and influence of this great American man.

 Concerted Efforts - Rosanne Cash
The album found its genesis in its title track, which, according to Cash, "was like a beacon, leading the whole process." Written six weeks before June Carter's death, a point at which no one suspected that she was even ill, the song seemed "foreboding" to Cash.
Of course, the other part of her heritage is the sophisticated, mainstream pop that she heard growing up from bands like the Beatles and the Eagles, and Bottell brought that quality to the mix.
To create a sound appropriate to her powerful subject, Cash worked with two producers: her husband and longtime co-producer and co-writer, John Leventhal (Shawn Colvin, David Crosby), and Bill Bottrell, who has worked with Sheryl Crow, Shelby Lynne and Linda Perry.

On her debut American release (she'd done a record in Germany that she now disowns), Rosanne Cash may not have shaken the money tree or the Billboard charts, but she and husband/producer/collaborator Rodney Crowell began to change the face of contemporary country music forever.

Jerry Jeff Walker recorded a hell of a version in the early '70s, but the crooning sorrow and ache in the grain of Cash's voice and the faux Caribbean rhythm behind a pedal steel-driven melody line make it an entirely different song.

Only in Nashville--where the folk music of the hills has been locked behind studio doors, guarded by the slickest of musicians--could Rosanne Cash's 10 Song Demo be viewed as a radical step.
