Rompler - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term rompler is a portmanteau of the terms ROM and sampler.
Rompler is a nickname for an electronic musical instrument that specializes in the playback of samples stored in ROM chips.
Because the rompler moniker betrays the fact that an instrument uses sample playback technology but lacks the ability to create samples, the term is never used in the marketing of electronic instruments thusly designed.

Multimedia SampleTank 2 sample player plug-in review
The best thing about romplers — sample-playback synthesizers with a huge selection of recorded sounds in ROM &; is their immediacy.
For this review, I used the Audio Units version of SampleTank XL 2.0.3 in MOTU Digital Performer 4.12 and Emagic Logic Platinum 6.3.3, and the VST version in Steinberg Cubase SX 2.0.0.
Switch on the power, turn up the audio, select a sound, and start playing.

Sonikmatter > Freeze and ROM-plers and RAM
While the freeze function creates an audio track so the ROMpler is not actually playing when you play your track back, the ROMpler is still open with a sound loaded up, and therefore it still eats up the RAM needed to hold that sound in memory.

My comment above about Freeze making use of RAM is simply as a buffer, during the actual Freeze process....and a small amount of RAM as a playback buffer for the frozen audio track.

Many of us have microphones and the capabilities to record acoustic and electric sources.

 How to use samples???
V Sampler is a true sampler, and Sampletank is a Rompler, meaning Sampletank mostly intended to play back samples.
That may be more than you want to know right now,but it's one example of the difference between a Sampler and a Rompler.
Using samples in Sonar (or the other hosts you mentioned) does require a Sampler or Rompler to access your samples to play them back.

Lending quick access to relatively high-quality sounds and voices meant that composers and song-writers did not have to be synth programmers or sampling wizards as well as musicians to achieve their musical goals.
In the early 1990s, Romplers became quite popular due to the proliferation of the E-MU Proteus series sound modules and other efforts by competing manufacturers.

I found that for this type of sound, the noise oscs and comb filter don't have to track the keyboard 100% to get the desired effect.
The idea was to create an airy or breathy sound that falls somewhere between pitched and unpitched noise, like the 'air' artifacts in a rompler sound.

Grooves Magazine - Gear Review: Ethnic ROMpler Roundup
Though there have been many specialty soft synths that lock in on one specific task and do it well, musicians wishing to get their "world music" groove on have up until recently been mostly left out in the cold.

Sure, all manner of pianos, organs, pseudo-guitars, and vintage keyboards have been more or less accurately emulated, but those desiring not-so-Western sounds pretty much had to fend for themselves, hire a few oud players for personal sampling sessions, and hope for the best.
