Roland: TR 909 gets slammed big time...
For me, I make music that has sounds I like, and the sound of the 909 is quite pleasing to my ears.
I like to create warped and original sounds that frame themselves around the sound of the 909, but that kick always brings me back to the root of the song.
I highly doubt it, since I've been listening to it for the last 20 years.

Contrary to all the hype the most attractive thing about the eary TRs (606, 808, 909) is not the sounds (although the sounds are good), but the programming interface.
If you learn to program it properly (which isn't difficult) you can come up with patterns on a 909 which simply wouldn't be possible using a sequencer and a sampler.

As you can tell, I'm hopelessly addicted to vintage analogue synths and drum machines, particularly anything Roland.
The JP-6 has basic MIDI and a fun and simple arpeggiator, and the 909 was full of instantly useable drum sounds (unuseable to many, I know!).

Introduced in 1980, the Roland TR-808 was one of the first programmable drum machines.

The TR-909 was a partially analog, partially sample-based drum machine built by Roland Corporation in 1984.
Being the brainchild of Tadao Kikumoto, the engineer behind the TB-303, it features a 16-step music sequencer and a drum kit that, at that time, aimed for as much realism as was possible.
