Rigoletto is an opera that is fueled by singers who can scale its range and notes....To eliminate the majority of the high notes altogether, especially when the tenor role is in the more than capable hands of Neil Shicoff, is sad.
Rigoletto is an undisputed masterpiece, with many of its arias, duets, and that famous quartet well known to opera buffs and others.
Renato Bruson is not the most beautiful voice recorded as Rigoletto, but he is genuinely touching, and it is hard to listen to him without being moved.

Two of the principal singers, Cheryl Parrish as Gilda and Mark Rucker as Rigoletto, are new to Vancouver Opera.
THE melodic and dramatic appeal of Giuseppe Verdi's Rigoletto -- undiminished since its successful premiere 150 years ago -- can easily withstand the imperfections inevitable in any production.
The chorus, prepared by Leslie Uyeda, was in top form, proving yet again that it is Vancouver Opera's most dependable asset.

Antigone (opera) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While Antigone has never been as popular as, say, Rigoletto, it has set new standards for the orchestra, the singers and the committed listener.
The structure of the work, its heavy emotional content, its novel fabrics of sound, all demand more of the listener than required in the usual opera performance.
Antigone is in Orff's words a "musical setting" for the Greek tragedy by Sophocles of the same name.

In the case of Rigoletto, though, he was explicit, saying that he conceived the opera as "an unending string of duets."
[D]uring the first performance of Rigoletto, when the violins announced that most elegant of motifs in the final act, the attentive public foresaw something new, and the tenor Mirate, seated astride a chair in Sparafucile's tavern, energetically and impudently attacked the piece.

Rigoletto (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The movie was apparently not based on the opera Rigoletto.
Rigoletto is a 1993 musical fantasy/drama produced for Feature Films for Families and described by Debbie James as "kind of a cross between Beauty and the Beast and The Man Without a Face, but with biblical themes" [1].
The film, set in depression-era America, depicts a young girl, Bonnie, who enjoys singing and gets lessons from the "monster" whom the townspeople suspect of foreclosing on mortgages all over town.

 Verdi's Macbeth
Entire operas were written with specific singers in mind: Bellini's Norma for Giuditta Pasta, Verdi's Rigoletto for Varesi, II Corsaro for the baritone Ronconi; and when it came for Verdi to write Ernani he had been prompted to write the opera because, as he put it, a "prima donna" opera was needed.
Macbeth is either totally at the mercy of the sorcerer's predictions, or of his wife's perverse will.
The listener's responses are commensurate with Macbeth's and Lady Macbeth's lack of virtue; their lack of sweetness and light (to borrow Matthew Arnold's words) compel us to recoil from them in confusion and spiritual disarray; we listen with fascination but never do we identify with them.
