Rhythm section - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rhythm section refers to the musicians whose primary jobs in a jazz or popular music band or ensemble is to establish the rhythm of a song or musical piece, often via repeated riffs or ostinati.
Chordal instruments such as rhythm guitar, (sometimes Banjo), piano or other keyboard instruments,(such as the electric piano) and vibraphone are often used, as well as auxiliary percussion and/or other instruments.
The tuba may be used as a means of evoking brass band sounds reminiscent of early jazz, such as New Orleans or Dixieland Swing.

Rhythm section refers to the musicians whose primary jobs in a jazz or popular music band or ensemble is to establish the rhythm of a song or musical piece.
Rock music tends to have a more stripped-down drum and bass rhythm section, whereas jazz and highly produced pop music often include more musicians, although many exceptions to this rule exist.
Most commonly, a rhythm section consists of musicians playing drums and bass guitar.

Barry Rudolph: Drum and Rhythm Section Tracking
Rhythm section tracking is the most important recording session in the production cycle of a record.
The rhythm track's sound is a component of the production style and identifies the record's musical genre.
Recording one musician at a time is a valid process when the vision of the song is still hazy (maybe you are still writing it) or you don't have the facility for recording everyone at once.

New Georgia Encyclopedia: Atlanta Rhythm Section
The brainchild of songwriter-producer Buddy Buie—a former member of Roy Orbison's Candymen and the pop band Classics IV—the Atlanta Rhythm Section was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 1996.
In live shows they turned up the guitars, but in the studio they dismissed long improvisational guitar solos for cleverly crafted songs.
The long-haired musicians portrayed themselves as "good ole boys," and their songs were lyrically similar to those of other southern rock acts.

Atlanta Rhythm Section biography >> liveDaily
Often described as a more radio friendly version of Lynyrd Skynyrd or the Allman Brothers, the Atlanta Rhythm section was one of many Southern Rock bands to hit the upper reaches of the charts during the late ‘70s.
The demand worked -- the Atlanta Rhythm Section scored a top ten single, “So Into You," on their next release, 1976's A Rock n' Roll Alternative, which was the group's first album to reach gold certification.
Finding time between sessions to record their own original material (which was initially, entirely instrumental), an early demo wound up landing the band a record deal.

 A Brief History of Jazz
The instruments in the marching band--a cornet or a trumpet to carry the melody, with a clarinet and trombone to fill in, and a rhythm section of drums or a string bass--formed the nucleus of the first jazz bands, which usually added only a piano, guitar, or banjo.
This music created by obscure black musicians in the late 19th century, at first was a synthesis of Western harmonic language and combined with the rhythms and melodic inflections of African music.
Using the popular tunes of the day, black musicians created variations of them through improvisation (variations on a melody line) and syncopation (placing accent on the normally weak beat of a measure) and intonation that was considered "out of tune" to Western classical music.

Yet one of the best Miles rhythm sections, Corea/Holland/DeJohnette, didn't make much of an impact in the studio; while they were absolutely scorching in concert (as any of the Fillmore concerts will attest to), this 2-on-1 CD gives a good idea of what they could do in the studio.
Like a lot of other jazz cerca 1969-70, there's a definite rock influence both in the rhythms and in Corea's use of the electric piano (he also plays acoustic).
The first album, To Hear Is To See (tracks 1-5), is relatively more "inside" and it's interesting to hear the rhythm trio swinging in a more conventional setting (one month later they'd be recording Bitches Brew).
