Rhythm and blues - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first rock and roll consisted of rhythm and blues songs like "Rocket 88" and "Shake, Rattle and Roll" making an appearance on the popular music charts as well as the RandB charts.
Today, the acronym "RandB" is almost always used instead of "rhythm and blues", and defines the modern version of the soul and funk influenced African-American pop music that originated with the demise of disco in 1980.
In its first manifestation, rhythm and blues was the predecessor to rockabilly and rock and roll.

 MSN Encarta - Rhythm-and-Blues Music
Until white rock-and-roll performers such as Bill Haley and Elvis Presley achieved mass popularity in the mid-1950s, what was commonly referred to as rock and roll by white disc jockeys and fans was referred to as the latest style of R&B by black disc jockeys and fans.
Despite vast differences between genres, such as rap and jump blues, there are common musical and social elements that link the many styles of R&B. The approach to musical rhythm is the most important distinguishing characteristic of R&B music and its substyles.
Timbre is another important distinguishing characteristic of R&B. Timbre refers to the quality or color of a sound—for example, a listener may tell a saxophone and a guitar apart, or distinguish one vocalist from another, by the differences in their timbre.

Rhythm and Blues was and still is a term used for a number of post-war American popular music forms.
The themes of blues songs understandably became more urban, the solo bluesman was joined by a number of other musicians and the blues combo was born.
As a Primer, it's an attempt to illustrate the music, the labels and the artists of a particular style but it cannot lay claim to be a theoretical, academic or scholarly treatise.

Blues is an African-American music that transverses a wide range of emotions and musical styles.
Country blues was usually recorded by a single male singer, self-accompanied on the guitar or piano, with perhaps an accompanying harmonica or simple percussion.

Rhythm and blues was a magpie music; anything that was fun was thrown in.
As the bands got smaller the electric guitar became more important: the country blues (a guitar-based music) had come to town, adding itself to the mixture, and the electrified guitar could be heard in noisy taverns.
As the dominant genre in black pop, RandB was succeeded by soul in the '60s, which became the new name of the Billboard black chart in '69, but the RandB feeling still lives in clubs and neighbourhoods: RandB like all musics nowadays is repertory music, but any self-respecting bar band still needs roots in it.
