Rock and roll - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rock and roll emerged as a defined musical style in America in the 1950s, though elements of rock and roll can be heard in rhythm and blues records as far back as the 1920s.
Early rock and roll combined elements of blues, boogie woogie, jazz and rhythm and blues, and is also influenced by traditional Appalachian folk music, gospel, Hillbilly and country and western.
In 1954, Elvis Presley recorded at Sam Phillips' Sun studios in Memphis, the regional hit "That's All Right, Mama." Elvis played a rock and country and western fusion called rockabilly, which was characterized by hiccuping vocals, slapping bass and a spastic guitar style.

Most of the songs are in in the Raga Lakshan Geet form - which means that the words of each song also teach the pertinent details of its raga.
The compositions are based upon traditional ragas, and are made unique by the interaction between the sitar and the guitar - a mixture that is not commonly experimented with in India.

A Brief History of Indian Music
Indian classical music is based on the ragas ("colors"), which are scales and melodies that provide the foundation for a performance.
Shankar was also instrumental in turning the raga into a product of mass consumption (he performed at both the 1967 Monterey Festival, the 1969 Woodstock Festival and the 1971 Concert for Bangla Desh), but he soon repudiated his "pop" period and returned to classical music.
His album Music of India - Morning and Evening Ragas (1955), containing two side-long ragas (the traditional Rag Sindhu Bhairavi and his own Rag Pilu Baroowa), was the first Indian classical recording to appear in the West, and the first recording of ragas on an LP.

Recorded in late 1966, the six songs on side one show the group at the peak of their power, with striking instrumental innovations and interplay which anticipate Jimi Hendrix and the Pink Floyd months before either had recorded.
Campbell is one of the best unheralded rock guitarists; his playing suggests the missing link between the Yardbirds and Hendrix, with amazing amplified Middle Eastern whines, wails, and explosions.
Despite some recklessly revelatory lyrics, the group's nerve-wrackingly daring time changes, Indian-like modes and unconventional song structures along with their otherworldly interpretations (Who Do You Love, I Unseen), create a killer thrust which is on par with the best efforts of the era.

Perhaps the Byrds didn't invent folk-rock, or psychedelic rock, or country-rock, although they were the first to put them on the charts, but surely they linked the era of vocal ensembles (Everly Brothers, Beach Boys, Beatles) with that of the rock bands (Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead).
"Byrds" is actually the name of three different bands: the band that linked Dylan with the Merseybeat, the band that initiated spatial-psychedelic rock, and the band that dove into country-rock.

Whereas Indian classical music is linear, using just one scale (raga) to improvise within a composition, jazz offers a much broader palette for improvisation with multiple scales used to improvise through complex harmonies.
Indian classical music is similar to jazz in the sense that both are forms of improvised music.
Indian classical music however, has some of the world's most complex rhythm structures and quarter tones that go beyond the western twelve tone scale.

The world of sitar is generally two-fold: classical Indian music played properly on a carefully tuned, traditional instrument; and a cheesy twang added gratuitously to 1970s rock, pop, and country, usually to signify the musicians' hipness to psychedelic drugs.
