Give Me That Old Time Prog Rock
Sure, there are some good prog bands releasing good albums, but these days there are far more bad prog bands releasing boring, low quality, derivative albums than good bands adding albums to the ranks of the classics of the genre.
When Van Halen’s first album was released in 1978, rock guitar and rock music in general were forever divided in two.
As much as some prog enthusiasts may not want to admit it, and despite all that has happened in progressive rock since then, the vast majority of the best progressive rock was recorded in the first half of the ‘70s.

ProGGnosis - CD/DVD/Album Release Information Page
This debut album of the German prog band Arilyn is one you have to listen to.
Arilyn deliver an album of Progged up rock filled with solid melodies, solid instrumental performances and solid vocals.
In our reviews we are often refering to other bands because most music is strongly influenced by stars from the 70-s or by bands from the 90-s.

 [No title]
It's also not uncommon for prog bands to create albums centered on a single theme, or even in which all of the tracks are part of a single rock-style opera, telling an entire story through song.
Prog bands are known to combine Rock and Metal sounds with frequent changes in time signature (it's pretty hard to dance to and even getting a good headbaning going can be a challenge) and key signatures.
While "love songs" aren't unheard of in Prog, you're more likely to hear songs that focus on more the more philosophical pursuits.

 S. T. Karnick on Snow by Spock's Beard on National Review Online
The personal computer radically reduced the cost of recording music of this complexity, and the aforementioned abandonment of melody by the rest of the industry left prog rock as one of the few options open to listeners who actually like music.
Led by keyboardist, guitarist, singer, and songwriter Neal Morse, the group was founded in California in 1992 and recorded its first album, The Light, in 1994.
This ignorance is the main reason the biggest critic-driven trends of the past four decades — folk, punk, disco, and then, simultaneously in the past decade, grunge, rap, metal, industrial, and Lilith folk — have been based on these things rather than music.

 Flamenco Fusion and Flamenco Rock
The first one is prog poprock with some beautiful accoustic songs, one song with humour like on Sisa's first.
But the few flamenco rock with sitar tracks with Gualberto they made were wonderful.
A bit more experimental electronic prog (but less nice) within song structure in "Romance", and a 17 minute very classical orchestrated track, at first not progressive, but then with jazzy elements added, and a second slightly prog rock part, with some orchestrations.

ATTEMPTING TO EXPLAIN THE OUTCAST: The Tenacity of Prog Rock
Not that respect dictates musical value, but Progressive (or prog) rock is one of the least regarded genres in the vast world of rock music.
But with all the negativity surrounding prog rock, I have to wonder why its mark and influence is everywhere in today's rock music.
The established notion of progressive rock remains somewhat exaggerated: Music that is classically-influenced, mystical, high-concept, flamboyant and built upon lengthy and complex 'compositions.' When comparing Captain Beefheart to this list, the only semi-accurate quality would involve the complexity found in his music.

 Hungarian Progressive Rock CDs
Apparently East was an instrumental progressive rock band in the 1970’s (their 1st album didn’t appear until the early 1980’s and contained vocals) and for unknown political reasons, their instrumental material was never released.
This is the 2002 third album from Latvian progressive rock band Holy Lamb (this one released on the Hungarian Periferic Records label), the five members joined by a number of singers and a flute player.
The music is typical After Crying, a mix of the styles from their previous albums: grand, sweeping cinematic symphonic; medieval vocal work; chamber music; acoustic instrumental solos and duos; a bit of Emersonian piano; and some full-blown symphonic prog rock.

 Music.com Prog-Rock/Art Rock
In fact, many prog bands were fond of crafting concept albums that made unified statements, usually telling an epic story or tackling a grand overarching theme.
A number of AOR bands used prog ideas in more concise songs; plus, Pink Floyd, Yes, and Genesis all had number one singles in the '80s by retooling their approaches.
Its heyday soon came to an end with the advent of punk, which explicitly repudiated prog's excesses and aimed to return rock and roll to its immediate, visceral roots.

Progressive Rock Ultimate Discography ... with MP3 and reviews
Take it as it is. It is not even exactly rock music: instruments are just a background and don't mean half as much as they do in most rock albums.
The album can rock (Red), it can be pretty and melodic (Fallen Angel), and it can make you want to tap your foot and dance (One More Red Nightmare).
This is album, is an essential listen for anyone interested in prog, and even more for anyone interested in King Crimson.

Welcome to the stage the unlikely saviours of rock, the new Prog Rockers.

 Prog Rock Corner--Eloy!
Our Prog Rock Corner selection for 10/27/96 was "Decay of the Logos" from the 1977 album Ocean (an album that also features the challengingly-named track "Atlantis' Agony at June 5th 8498, 13 P.M. Gregorian Earthtime").
Some internal conflict over the band's prog style led to Schriever leaving the group, after which Eloy began the move towards the "space rock" sub-genre of prog, releasing three more albums with this line-up.
The band split up in 1975, but Bornemann reformed the band with all-new members, and their series of releases on EMI was the group's greatest commerical success to date, featuring the albums Dawn (1976), Ocean (1977), and Silent Cries and Mighty Echoes (1979).

BBC - BBC Four Time Shift - Prog Rock
Alex Mackintosh's Time Shift traces the history of Prog Rock as a genre back to the heydays of 1960s psychedelia, seeing how, for many British musicians and fans who had educated themselves on the RandB circuit, musical extemporisation and concept albums were an exciting departure.
As a music genre, Prog Rock still finds it difficult to be taken seriously.
And, for all of punk's blast of much needed fresh air, it's difficult not to have a little sentimentality for a time when musical imagination rather than product sales was a measure of achievement.

Matt Howarth's Sonic Space - Prog Rock at the Atmosphere's Edge
This CD release of a 1980 prog rock classic is enhanced with 62 minutes of live material from the same year.
Although mainly an introspective album of relationship-oriented energetic slow rock, the music on this 64-minute CD possesses a spacey quality, sparkling with a Grateful Dead edge.
The majority of the CD is taken up by the 38-minute title track, an epic aural journey into symphonic prog rock.

 noise
A new generation of bands is redefining progressive rock in the post-punk era.
It's about rock bands that accommodate only one level of listening attention, which is full immersion (and, in some cases, submission).
They are too intense and rocking for the Wire magazine-sponsored avant-garde, where laptops and warmed-over free improvisation are still big news.

This really rocks, then as you listen more you find that they continue to offer listeners more diversity than ever possible, or expected for that matter.
The lead off track which is a three part tour de force that takes the band through all the paces, displays every position in the band and their particular talents and how congeals to form their remarkable unit.
I say this without any wavering… this is one of the best albums Spock’s Beard has ever recorded.

 UK70s Prog Rock Greats
Prog's often-inspired compositions and superior musicianship were not lost on the millions of fans scooping up albums like "Close to the Edge," "Trick of the Tail" and "Brain Salad Surgery." While punk and disco have not aged well, progressive rock not only survived the 1970s, but still sounds as great today, if not
Many listeners not even born when the music was made write in all the time to ask about it and want to know more.
We include a sampling of 'non-UK' 70s tracks from the likes of PFM, Focus, Happy the Man, Le Orme, and Kansas, and include newer groups such as Spock's Beard, The Flower Kings, Marillion, and Transatlantic.

Stockton, CA's Pavement may well have been the second most influential rock band of the early '90s (after Nirvana), ushering in a new era of convoluted musical structures and rock and roll irony.
Unwound is one of indie rock's most important bands ever.
Over the course of a few short decades, genres as diverse as garage, psych, surf, folk-rock, glam, prog, punk, New Wave, No Wave, hard rock, metal, industrial, and indie rock have all become recognized and respected, and all fall in some way beneath the "rock" umbrella.

The word "prog" is a shortened form of "progressive." In this context, "progressive" means that the songs move from one thing to another, instead of just addressing one theme/style/sound/feeling like a lot of rock music does.

Prog-rock is not dead...it just smells funny
I spoke with Covach at ProgDay '97, the annual prog-rock festival held near Chapel Hill, where he explained that the decline of prog-rock was precipitated by the advent of new wave, punk, and disco music in the late 70's...
At that time, popular music had evolved from its formula of short songs with identifiable "hooks", to long compositions...often instrumentals designed to showcase the musicians' virtuosity.
(Suggested intro: Progressive rock is a musical style that enjoyed a considerable amount of popularity during the 1970's.

CD Baby: PROG, ROCK & JAM: Beyond Rock
Beyond Rock covers a lot of musical territory, from jazz to rock to a surprisingly aggressive "Dangerous in Deed" by Jam Camp.
It is a bit difficult to describe ten different styles and bands on a seventy-two minute CD, but the general message here is that progressive music isn't limited to Europe, and that American bands certainly have much to offer people that like progrock with real progressive developments and are interested in musical developments.
Progressive-rock in the truest sense, BEYOND ROCK features ten of the West Coast's most eclectic ensembles pushing past the limits of formulaic pop to create original, intelligent music for thinking listeners.

No coverage of the 50th anniversary of rock ’n’ roll would be complete without at least one chapter on the ever-unpopular yet hugely influential genre, progressive rock.
The foundation of every prog-rock song is intense, active musicianship, which explains why many mainstream rock bands from the past 20 years have at least one loyal prog-rock fan in them.

New Gibraltar Encyclopedia of Progressive Rock KA-KH
Khazad Doom may be "the band that prog forgot", partially because none of the recordings are very high quality and partially because of the low distribution of their music.
However, there is a definite rock vibe and some of the melodies and keyboard work pull the music towards the realm of symphonic rock.
Much of the music is blues-rock with light prog touches, but not "heavy" like many such bands of the time tended to be.

The Morning News - The Letters of Gary Benchley, Rock Star: The Coming of Indie Prog, by Gary Benchley
Like Jacob, I wrestled with the angel of rock, refusing to release him until he gave me his blessing.
When I came to New York, I was convinced that, as a dashing man of 5’10’ with a fine singing voice and musical ambitions, I could Casanova my way up the East River and down the Hudson.
But the gap between buying a guitar and playing one proves wider than expected, and it may only be Depeche Mode who can save the day.
