Prince Paul is one of the most respected producers in all of the music industry.
Prince Paul's new album, The Politics of the Business, has both, but is missing a certain je ne sais quoi.
The album also addressed rather personal issues for Prince Paul, mainly the trouble that arose around his last album.

Prince Paul: It is. And rappers are parodies of themselves.
The Prince and the Automator are currently busy on their own individual work: Automator's producing an album for Handsome Boy graduate Del the Funky Homosapien, and Paul just did the same for Brown-educated MC Paul Barman, whose Jewish-suburbanite background and oversexed-undergrad lyricism should flip as many wigs as De La did back in the day.

Choler Magazine Album Review: Prince Paul Prince Among Thieves
Prince Paul doesn't sample so much as possess a song or musical genre like a demon, infusing them with his own off-kilter persona.
Paul jacks the music into fifth gear for the showdown track, with some lilting vibes work on top of a driving drum track, a random sprinkling of robotic noise, and proof that Ol' Dirty Bastard delivers the best hooks for the business.
Paul can warp his music to fit the group, nicely demonstrated by his minimal but effectively odd "Weapon World" (for Kool Keith) and the lightly kinetic track for De La that manages to sample a song about Corn Flakes.

 Prince Paul
Paul is most successful on "More Than U Know," which features the album's catchiest beats underneath a spirited ode to crack by De La Soul.
In contrast, A Prince Among Thieves is a coherent album with a unifying theme.
Further confusing matters, the title track is an epilogue in which True recounts a completely different version of the movie's plot, making persuasive claims for his own innocence and eulogizing Tariq as a cokehead who just couldn't get his life together.

Thieves follows a hybrid musical odyssey by plotting the hip-hop skit (a generally comic, seemingly illogical interlude that Prince Paul made popular on De La Soul's CD 3 Feet High and Rising) and tells a story scene-by-scene against an ever-shifting tapestry of sampled sounds, songs, filters and rhythms.

In 1996, Paul released his first solo album, "Psychoanalysis: What Is It?" a mostly instrumental record that gave hip-hop a brain and allowed its subconscious to open up on vinyl.
Under Paul's deft direction, "Prince Among Thieves" manages to be both a rap and a hip-hop record.
At the beginning, Prince Paul, the 31-year-old Paul Huston, was just a kid DJ with New York old-schoolers Stetsasonic.

Paul's ability to challenge himself and to put his music before his mind—“I will just think of something and it takes on a life of its own," says Paul.
Paul loosely ties the album around a series of skits detailing a new case being investigated by the New York City Police Department's "Mental Victims Unit." Cribbing the dramatic scene change sound effect from TV's Law and Order, Paul adds an ominous voice-over to introduce listeners to the criminal-at-large: inane iniquity.
Originally conceived as an instrumental album by Peter Agoston (who has released MF Doom's series of instrumental albums), Paul has in fact collected archived beats dating from 1988 to 2000, and invited some friends to add the odd vocal or so.

Prince Paul - Politics Of The Business: Silent Uproar
All the pointed commentary and comedy would be for naught, however, were it not for Prince Paul’s genuine love for hiphop, a love that permeates the disc; “Drama Queen,” about girls who can’t deal with being mistresses to “the music” when their men are in the studio, sums up this sentiment perfectly.
Prince Paul — one of the genre’s most innovative and legendary producers - has dedicated an entire concept album of sorts to that quandary in Politics of the Business.
In a signature 180-degree move from past work, Paul eschews bizarre samples and experimental beats to skewer his target with a taste of it's own medicine: radio-friendly tracks and A-list guest appearances (including Erick Sermon, Chris Rock, Ice-T, Guru and DJ Premier of Gang Starr, Dave Chappelle, and many others).

Much like Itstrumental, the other album Prince Paul released this year, Hip Hop Gold Dust is an album that collects a pile of the 'lost tracks' in Prince Paul's long backcatalogue.
The De La Soul track that opens the album (after what could be the oldest skit Paul has on record) is no doubt the first thing that people will gravitate toward on the disc, and it's solid enough, but it does sound like a toss-off.
It is this perception of Prince Paul that may actually help the hip-hop fan's collective opinion of Paul's new album, Hip Hop Gold Dust -- no matter how you look at it, the old school is all over this disc.

That isn't to say that Prince Paul was ever the savior of Top 40 radio, but his deft touch with a sampler and buoyant beats always yielded cutting edge fare.
The intentionally blatant consumerism of "princepaulonline.com" is as hysterical as it is deadly serious, while the bumping title-track is all forthright truth courtesy of living legends Chuck D and Ice-T, and the poignant "Beautifully Absurd" wonderfully encapsulates the album's slightly paranoid yet astutely forthright aesthetic.
When it comes to hip-hop, it's important never to mistake hyperbole for respect, and while it might seem excessive to laud Paul's previous accomplishments, the fact remains that he was bangin' out tracks and tweakin' turntables while Timbaland was saving up to buy his first sampler.
