Reminded me of forgotten favourites (Associates, Cabaret Voltaire), caused me to dig out old albums to listen again (Metal Box-Pil) and made me laugh out loud at the utter folly of certain genres (Positive Punk- Brigandage,Richard North where are you now?).
I was 14 in 78 and missed out on punk but eagerly devoured the new wave and post-punk music which followed.As other reviewers have commented he does favour certain bands (Pil, Scritti, Magazine are obvious examples)but in a work of this magnitude that is his right.
So here are a couple of criticisms: he doesn't contextualise the music in the political and cultural context of the day as well as Jon Savage did for punk 1976-1978 in "England's Dreaming".

Positive Punk was the blur between hardcore punk and the new up and coming Goff scene.
Brigandage started life in 1982 as 'the next Sex Pistols', and were thrown into the short lived 'Positive Punk' scene that her boyfriend Richard North a freelance writer/member of Blood And Roses, accidentally created in a New Musical Express piece in '83.
It's funny, but a lot of young people are going to hear you and they won't think of you as a punk band at all, but as a rock band.

I was in a band call 'Bikini Mutants' when I lived Somerset, this was in the 'positive punk' era we used to play a lot of gigs with 'The Mob' (Crass signed proto positive punk band), we played around the west country quite a bit but not really anywhere else.

 Prindle Record Reviews - Richard Hell And The Voidoids
Richard Hell may have invented punk fashion with his little torn shirts, but he sure didn't express a whole lotta punk rage in his music, at least not externally.
This is one of the greatest punk rock records of all time.
Hell complements it with a totally unpracticed voice that just quivers and spits at you while you dig the hapnin' vibes of the NON-punk Voidoids (featuring Marky Ramone before he was Marky Ramone!).

The opening of the Batcave in London's Soho in July 1982 might be seen as marking the emergence of this scene (which had briefly been labeled positive punk by the New Musical Express).
By the late 1970s, there were a small number of post punk bands in Britain labeled "gothic." However, it was not until the early 1980s that gothic rock became its own subgenre within post-punk and that followers of these bands started to come together as a distinctly recognisable group or movement.
Such references in their music and image were originally tongue-in-cheek, but as time went on, bands and members of the subculture took the connection more seriously.
