Pop (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pop is an album released by the Irish rock band U2 in March of 1997 (see 1997 in music).
The album's first single, "Discothèque", was a huge dance and airplay success.
Critical reaction was mixed at the time of its release, and it has come to be regarded as one of the band's lesser albums.

 Pop by U2 CD
POP is a gifted, beautiful album; its chilling music and sneering soundscapes are the perfect vehicles for its cryptic, elliptical lyrics.
I'm genuinly moved by this album everytime I listen to it.
Like much pop music in the mid-1990s, POP is cobbled together out of buzzy synthesizers and reverberant keyboards, techno drum loops and funky live drums, guitars distorted into clouds of metal, vocals you sometimes have to work to hear, and songs that seek God and sex and other important stuff in the world's trash heaps.

TAP: Web Feature: Pop Lives!. by Devin McKinney. March 1, 2004.
A new album mixes Jay-Z and the Beatles.
A crazed, controlled hybrid of the Beatles' 1968 White Album and Jay-Z's 2003 Black Album, it's a breakthrough example of the mash-up, an emergent underground form in which fan-remixers use amateur-accessible computer software to combine existing recordings in new forms.
The White Album was an inspired choice of source beats and organizing riffs, seeing as it featured some of the earliest samples and proto mash-ups to ever reach the pop mainstream.

More with their eponymous 1975 album became even more successful with the multi-platinum Rumours, which became the band's most celebrated album and one of the best-selling albums of all time.
The album was also their first to be made without Bernie Leadon, who had given the band much of its country flavor, and with rock guitarist Joe Walsh.

 Iggy Pop Album Reviews
The band on this album isn't half as demented as any of the Stooges' line-ups, but they provide some excellent, occasionally hard-rocking music that makes it the most accessible Pop-related album up 'til then.
These songs aren't where the weight of the album is, though, as the longer songs leave more of a lasting impression, "China Girl" not in the least.
While too many naysayers have claimed that The Idiot was basically another Bowie album – albeit one with a guest vocalist – Pop's stamp on the album is unmistakeable.

 Crowded House Album Reviews
Of course, as with all Crowded House albums it is Finn who dominates, and though this album isn't his finest moment from a songwriting standpoint, it doesn’t deserve its status as the forgotten Crowded House album.
Actually, both of those songs are somewhat slight musically, but that lighter touch is actually part of this album's appeal (and yes, it does hold together surprisingly well as an album), though the band's trademark moody textures, jangly guitars, and airy harmonies are all over the album as well.
Perhaps the album is also a few songs longer than it needs to be (the "hidden track" is terrible), but pop music doesn’t get much better than the gorgeous “Fall At Your Feet,” the delightfully breezy and romantic “Weather For You,” and the devastatingly moving “She Goes On,” a love letter to a dearly departed.

Gwen Stefani - Could the charming, hyperactive kook really be our new pop queen? By Jody Rosen
All of which leaves Stefani a hit solo album away from a place in the diva firmament.
Stefani has called these girls her muses, and they crop up everywhere, flanking the singer on her album cover, rescuing her from drowning in the "What You Waiting For?" video, and starring in several songs, notably "Harajuku Girls," the most extravagant piece of musical Orientalism this side of The Mikado.
Stefani's songs are deliberately cluttered and vulgar and swollen with pop clichés; it's an aesthetic of messiness, and to assail Love.

Even though the new album, Set You Free, is one of the best pop albums to be released so far this year, you won't find accolades heaped upon the band in Spin or Rolling Stone.
"On Warmer Music" also sets the tone for the album lyrically, decrying the invasion of the "self-satisfied smug rock nation." Though most of the band's previous songs are more personal and introspective, "On Warmer Music" pronounces a shift in tone musically and lyrically.
These new additions to their sound, which can sometimes prove to be overkill for other bands, do not clutter up the record.

The album continues with a sound that’s equally lush, edgy and crooning, with plenty of drawn out “ooh’s” from Holmes, and a combination of ’80s synth and mid-’90s electronica.
Holmes promises that the next album, which is written and now awaiting studio time, is going to be “as much of a pop album as ‘Thriller.’”

The epic songs loop endlessly in hypnotizing repetition as tiny alterations in the resonance and tone function as a means of increasingly disorientating the listener.

Another one of my favorite U2 songs kicks off the second half of the album, with squealing, siren-like guitar noise and a mid-tempo beat - it's an effective marriage of the band's electronic tinkering with Bono's more "soulful" side, and because of that, a little more hope is allowed to shine through.
