Plena - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Other instruments heard in plena music are the cuatro, the guiro, the maracas, requinto, and accordions.
The fundamental melody of the plena (a dance difficult to classify), as in all regional Puerto Rican music, has a decided Spanish strain; it is marked in the resemblance between the plena Santa María and a song composed in the Middle Ages by Alfonso the Wise, King of Spain.
Plena is a traditional form of Puerto Rican music.

Music of Puerto Rico - Genres: Plena
The plena may be danced, but that is less important than the lyrics and melody, in contrast to the bomba.
They validated the plena as a traditional music genre, for the younger generations of Puerto Ricans who were only familiar with salsa and thought that the old folk music was passé.
By the later part of this century, the plena had ceased to be the pre-eminent genre of popular music for the common folk.

Plena is much more melodic than bomba, both in the vocal line and in the use of melody instruments such as accordion, harmonica, and guitar.
Plena is called "el periodico cantado" (the sung newspaper) because its lyrics, sung in sharp, ironic tones, often relate local daily news, historical events, gossip, and a host of other themes covering a broad scope of human experience.
The result was plena, a music tha was to become the most popular, influential and, for a time, commercially successful music genre in Puerto Rico.

Plena, like bomba is a dancer-drum-response art, where dancers and drummers mimic each other's rhythms in improvisation.
The first time I ever hear Bomba and Plena music (while looking through my father's old CDs), it did not take too long for me to shelve it.
It was beautiful; 500 years of tradition and pure, concentrated culture bundled up and compressed into a few simple drumbeats and folkloric songs.

 Rambles: Plena Libre, Estamos Gozando!
For the uninitiated, Plena Libre plays a traditional form of Puerto Rican folk music known as bomba y plena -- two genres that are inextricably linked together by tradition and the inevitable marriage of dance (from bomba) and the merry call-and-response vocal style of plena.
Several songs shout out plena's lyrical origins as "el periodico cantado" -- sung newspaper, a living newscast of the poor's daily lives.
Bomba y plena have a pastiche of musical influences, but most folks agree that they started in Africa, since both grew popular amongst slaves and peasantry in the sugar-growing areas of Puerto Rico.

 Plena Libre
The plena began life in Puerto Rico in the 18th century, the music for couples dancing, and the lyrics serving almost as a new medium, like corrido and calypso.
But in the seven records since then, the 13-piece band has developed and broadened their sound.
Their first album, Juntos Y Revueltos was an instant smash at home, spawning hit singles and gaining airplay.

In spite of the often quoted nationalistic blurbage found in liner notes, press releases, the printed press and even so-called scholarly sources, the bomba and plena genres aren’t a sure fire formula for musical success, nor are they as popular as they are made to be at times.
Thus, rather than invest themselves in musical archeology, or producing music for mostly archival purposes―à la Paracumbé―Plena Libre aspires to make plena (to a large extent) and bomba (to a lesser degree) viable contemporary musical forms of entertainment.
Luis MarÃ-n’s work on piano is to be highly commended, not only in this medley but also throughout the rest of the production.

World Music Central - Plena Libre celebrates musical "Evolución" with new CD and U.S. tour
The core of the band's repertoire remains the danceable plena, the folkloric form that was born 100 years ago and served as a "musical newspaper" for itinerant farm workers.
The core repertoire is further expanded using a variety of rhythms and styles - the Brazilian samba, complicated 6/8ths, and African touches of the bata, the descarga (jam) style of the Latin jazz tune, and even a club remix bonus track.
In short, the tracks on Evoluciónpreserve the essence of traditional plena and bomba styles but pulse with the new-found freedoms given them by Gary Núñez, the band's leader and arranger, and the musicians.
