Plectrum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Items such as small coins may successfully be used as a substitute plectrum if the need arises, and in fact Brian May (guitarist from the band Queen) has made the use of a coin part of his signature sound.
These musicians also use nylon or gut strings on their guitars, which have a mellower sound and are more gentle on the hands.
They are made of a variety of materials, including tortoise shell and celluloid, but today plastic is the most common.

The plectrum banjo is usually strummed with a flat pick using chords and is traditionally associated with Dixieland jazz and 1920s pop music.
Also, generally speaking, music store employees are not as experienced with plectrum and tenor banjos as they are with guitars and 5-string banjos.
The plectrum is a better instrument for "chord melody" playing.

 BBC - h2g2 - The Plectrum
A plectrum (plectra, or plectrums in plural) is in a very general sense anything that can be used to pluck, strum or pick strings of musical instruments, such as the harpsichord, the balalaika, the shamisen, the bouzouki, the mandolin or the electric guitar.
Mediaeval and Renaissance writers used the term 'plectrum' to denote the 'bow', such as the bow of a violin, as there was no Latin word for 'bow'.
They are about three times bigger than guitar plectrums and are made of horn or ivory.

But if you want to use a plectrum (I assume, maybe mistakenly, that you are playing on a acoustic or classical guitar) then use a thinner one for strumming.
The plectrum can give you another sound, a more picky strumming sound, but it's up to you what you want!
In my acoustic days (when I played classical stuff and comtemporary fingerpikcing things) I never used a plectrum when I strummed the guitar.

Plectra / Plectrums : Lesson by Graham “Greybeard” Merry
Unfortunately, offering concrete advice on plectrum selection is very difficult, there is probably no piece of a guitarist's equipment which is quite as subjective as his plectrum.
Everyone has fairly concrete ideas about what sound his guitar should have, what strings he should use, etc., but nothing has quite the wide variety of options as the humble plectrum - ask 20 guitarists what they use and you are likely to get 20 different answers.
They give excellent control over lead passages, but suffer in the rhythm category.
