A Player's Guide to Rotary Valve Trumpets
The acoustical design of the instrument favors a more tapered attack and decay of each tone and encourages a more fluid, legato, or vocal tonal production which is ideal for romantic music of a lyrical nature.
This does not mean, however, that these instruments are small in tone or volume; a comparison of bore size alone is virtually meaningless, since it is only one factor in the overall acoustical design of the instrument.
They are by nature two different instruments for two different types of music and styles of playing, each having its own unique properties and strengths, each suited to a particular type of literature.

 Early Valve Designs
This slender piston-type valve had some inherent acoustic problems.
Another early type of valve seen in Germany was the Berlin valve, initially developed by 1827 by Stölzel and further improved in 1828 by the Berlin band leader and instrument designer Wilhelm Wieprecht (1802-1872) [Heyde, part 2, 45, 48].
It is a piston valve design, derived from the box valve, which shared the acoustical advantages of the box valve but was much easier to construct and maintain.

Piston valve - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first piston valve instruments were developed just after the start of the 19th century.
Since the early decades of the 19th century, piston valves have been the most common on brass instruments.
When opened ("pressed" and "pushed down"), each valve changes the pitch by diverting the air stream through additional tubing, thus lengthening the instrument and lowering the harmonic series on which the instrument is vibrating.

Furthermore it does away entirely with the camshaft, pushrods and rockers, replacing them all with a single gear running directly off the driveshaft.
The most well-known of these were the Stearns Company of Cleveland, which sold a car named the Stearns-Knight, and the Willys firm offered a car called the Willys-Knight.
In a normal engine using poppet valves, the valves are opened by the camshaft pushing down on the top of the valve, sometimes via a long pushrod and rocker taking the power from the crankshaft area to the top of the cylinders.

 Valve
For example, depressing the first valve will normally result in lowering the original pitch by one step, or the interval of a second.
On a brass instrument, a valve is a mechanism that, when in use, directs the air column along additional tubing inside the instrument, thus producing a different fundamental and harmonic series.
Most modern valved instruments employ similar valve systems which results in the same patterns of valve combinations to alter a pitch.
