RACHMANINOV Piano Concerto No.3. Suite No.2 for 2 Pianos. Argerich/Freire. Berlin RSO/Chailly (Philips) - INKPOT
SHOSTAKOVICH/ TCHAIKOVSKY/ KIEEWETTER Trios for Piano, Violin and Cello.
The first Philips release (446673-2-full-price, coupled with Argerich's Tchaikovsky First Piano Concerto under Kiril Kondrashin and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra) was said to be a considerable improvement over the pirate recordings that preceded it, but still suffered from a minor glassiness in sound typical of digital remasterings from that period.
The sound is still extremely good, and this set is both an excellent introduction to Argerich's concerto recordings and a testimony to perhaps her most fruitful collaboration with a conductor.

Los Angeles Philharmonic Association - Piece Detail
He was now performing more as a pianist and conductor than composing, but he began the Third Piano Concerto in the summer of 1909 at his home at Ivanovka, in southern Russia, for a planned American concert tour that fall.
Fragments of the second theme are introduced in horn, clarinet, trumpet, oboe, and piano, then it is fully stated in strings, a staccato-figure variation on the rhythmic motive that evolves into a sweet, singing tune.
The opening Allegro begins in the orchestra, and the piano overlays the melancholic but dignified first theme.

:: INKPOT: RACHMANINOV The Second Piano Concerto: An Inktroduction - INKPOT
Rachmaninov handles the relationship between piano and orchestra with great delicacy, allowing the piano to insert six notes of melody between the first two phrases of the clarinet, then reversing these roles by allowing the orchestra to comment between phrases of piano cantilena.
The Second Piano Concerto is characteristic of this fine balance, sublime in its lyricism, but always whispering a sincere emotional message.
As for the concerto's opening string theme, which harkens back to Orthodox plainchant with its step-wise progression and limited range of notes, it is actually a fuller development of the bass line from a linking passage in the finale.

RACHMANINOV Piano Concerto No. 3 Argerich [TB]: Classical Reviews- August 2001 MusicWeb(UK)
Rachmaninov's Third Concerto is one of the most challenging works of its kind, and challenging for all concerned: pianist, conductor, orchestra and audience.
The piano fares best in terms of the sound, of course, but there are better recorded studio versions, in particular by Vladimir Ashkenazy.
It is a fine collaboration, driving through to an exhilarating, truly uplifting conclusion, crowning a performance in which the lyricism and the power of Rachmaninov's conception have been vividly drawn.

Serge Prokofiev - Third Piano Concerto, Martha Argerich - A Good-Music-Guide Review
The Piano Concerto in G is a work of the jazz age, with the hustle and bustle of 1920's city life, remeniscient of Gershwin, the heart-wrenchingly sad Adagio, and the final explosion of oriental fireworks.
Born in Argentina in 1941, winning several international piano competitions, and battling depression in the mid 1960's, Argerich burst to international renown with this recording.

The technical demands are extreme, but it is also musically and emotionally the most highly wrought of his concertos.
Her live performance, recorded with the Berlin Radio Symphony under Riccardo Chailly in 1982, is quite astounding, not only for the sheer brilliance of her technique, but lightning changes of mood and the sheer physical excitement that she builds steadily through the concerto.

RACHMANINOV Piano Concerto No.3. Preludes, et al. Cherkassky/Royal PO/Temirkanov (Decca) - INKPOT
It was no accident that one of Rachmaninov's friends was the great Russian singer Fyodor Chaliapin, or that in Cherkassky's hands the Rachmaninov Third comes across as an opera that happens to be written for piano and orchestra.
His playing, sublime and autumnal, frees the piece from the usual struggle and drama one would expect and unearths the melodic and harmonic wealth of this work for the wonder that it is.
Cherkassky's fantastic control of color and nuance is fully on display, and he makes the piano sing gloriously, with a tone that is pure velvet, never clangorous or metallic (all the more amazing since he was a short man, like Hoffman, with stubby fingers).

Classica / Horowitz plays Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 3
The Third Piano Concerto is a standard work in the repertoire of virtuoso concert pianists and shows the composer, who is sometimes unfairly called old-fashioned, as fully in tune with his time.
A few weeks later, the two artists got together to play Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 3 - with Horowitz as the soloist and Rachmaninov as the "orchestra" at a second piano.
For his lengthy concert tour, he had brought the recently completed Third Piano Concerto with him.
