Piano Concerto No. 2 (Brahms) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unlike the Piano Concerto No. 1, which was rather cooly received, the Piano Concerto No. 2 was a great success, and Brahms went on to play the piece in a number of successful concerts in Germany, Austria and the Netherlands, some conducted by Hans von Bülow.
The four movement form, together with the length of the work (a typical performance lasting around 50 minutes), means the concerto is close to being a symphony with piano solo.
The piece was given its public premiere in Budapest on November 9, 1881 with Brahms himself playing the solo part.

Johannes Brahms - Piano Concerto No. 2
Brahms's second piano concerto was begun in 1878 and completed in July of 1881.
The composer played the solo part at the first performance, a private concert in Meiningen in October 1881, and was also the pianist for the public premiere, in Budapest, on November 9 of that year.
The second piano concerto thus presents special challenges for the soloist, above and beyond mere endurance.

:: INKPOT: RACHMANINOV The Second Piano Concerto: An Inktroduction - INKPOT
The Second Piano Concerto is characteristic of this fine balance, sublime in its lyricism, but always whispering a sincere emotional message.
Rachmaninov handles the relationship between piano and orchestra with great delicacy, allowing the piano to insert six notes of melody between the first two phrases of the clarinet, then reversing these roles by allowing the orchestra to comment between phrases of piano cantilena.
As for the concerto's opening string theme, which harkens back to Orthodox plainchant with its step-wise progression and limited range of notes, it is actually a fuller development of the bass line from a linking passage in the finale.

.which the piano grabs and turns into a cheekily chattering tune in duple time, sparking variants as it whizzes along.
With a thunderous “rock 'n' roll” vamp the piano bulldozes into an amazingly inventive development, capped by a huge climax that sounds suspiciously like a cheeky skit on Rachmaninov.

BRAHMS Piano Concerto No.2. SCHUMANN Introduction and Allegro appasionato. Biret/Polish RNSO/Wit (Naxos) - INKPOT
One might find, as I did that the piano sound here is rather dry and thus unattractive, this seems to be because Biret has pedalled the piano less in order to let the listener hear more voices.
Here the great opening horn solo followed by the piano "echo" is not hurried, savoured rather, and after the first theme is stated, the defiant piano solo following is appropriately rhetorical, but not overtly so.
But more rewards come in the ensuing solo for the piano, where she, without rushing, molds and shapes it so that the thrilling orchestra passage that follows seems inevitable.

Ludwig van Beethoven - Piano Concerto 2
Other than an unpublished concerto from his teenaged years, Beethoven's first two piano concerti were written in 1794 and 1795.
In his own early piano concerti, he built upon this familiarity, echoing Mozart's overall structure, while opting for rather heartier orchestration and more unusual, less mannered melodies and harmonies that hint at the power to come in later Beethoven compositions.
This influence is most easily perceived in Beethoven's early chamber music, yet his first two piano concerti also bear a certain Mozartian flavor.

Dmitry Shostakovich Piano Concerto No 2
Only strings, piano, and a single horn are heard exchanging tender, lyrical lines, the right hand piano part singing a plangent tune above slow arpeggios in the left.
The piano immediately segues into another quick-stepping movement with the second Allegro, this one quite rollicking in tone.
Shostakovich reins such moments back in, however, to let the piano restate the theme lightly, almost delicately, in an extended solo.

I am a big fan of Laredo (she was the first to record Rachmaninoff's complete works for solo piano in the 1970s).
Although her reading of the score was a bit more formal than, say, a Rubinstein or Bolet, Laredo has this quality not much unlike Alexis Weissenberg does in the Rachmaninoff Third Concerto recording he made with Georges Pretre and the Chiacago Symphony in 1968.
Unlike Horowitz, she has a way of "understating the obvious," which is something few can do with Rachmaninoff's Second Concerto (note here that the only Rachmaninoff concerto recorded by Horowitz was the Third).

Rachmaninoff's music, particularly his piano compositions, are characterized by their dark and massive chords, whose dramatic effects and strong melodic lines have made them enormously popular.
Other compositions include Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini (1934), for piano and orchestra; an orchestral tone poem, The Isle of the Dead (1909); The Bells (1913), for chorus and orchestra; three symphonies; two sacred choral works, Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom (1910) and Vespers (1915); and many piano pieces and songs.
His best-known works are the second (1901) of his four piano concertos, and the Prelude in C Sharp Minor (1892), for piano.
