Piano Concerto (Grieg) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Grieg's concerto is often compared to the Piano Concerto of Robert Schumann — it is in the same key, the opening descending flourish on the piano is similar, and the overall style is considered to be closer to Schumann than any other single composer.
The Piano Concerto in A minor by Edvard Grieg was the only concerto Grieg completed.
It is written for solo piano, two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, four horns, two trumpets, three trombones, timpani, violins, violas, cellos and double basses.

As a composer Schumann's gifts are clearly heard in his piano music and in his songs.
Later piano music by Schumann includes the Album fuer die Jugend of 1848, Waldszenen of 1849 and the collected Bunte Blaetter and Albumblaetter drawn from earlier work.
Other important chamber music by Schumann includes three piano trios, three violin sonatas and a number of shorter character-pieces that include the Maerchenbilder for viola and piano, collections of Phantasiestuecke with alternative instrumentation and the cello and piano Fuenf Stuecke im Volkston, with other short pieces generally suggesting a literary or otherwise extra-musical programme.

Chicago Symphony Orchestra - January 18: Staatskapelle Berlin - Schumann
The slow opening is sheer magic: piano arpeggios cushion a lyrical melody begun by the clarinet and continued in the horn.
Schumann was already working on the piece when the young violinist Joseph Joachim visited, inspiring the composition of a similar fantasy for violin and orchestra.
Although Schumann eventually wrote a serious, three-movement piano concerto, even that began life as a single-movement fantasy, and he continued to be drawn to the idea of writing a big, poetic concert piece.

Schumann, as a pianist composer, made the piano partake fully in the expression of emotion in such songs, often giving it the most telling music when the voice had finished.
In 1841, however, Schumann turned to orchestral music: he wrote symphonies and a beautiful, poetic piece for piano and orchestra for Clara that he later reworked as the first movement of his Piano Concerto.
He wrote some piano music and took lessons from Friedrich Wieck.

Schumann is quoted occasionally, and a new thematic idea is developed, where the piano wanders into beautiful melodies only to lose them to chaos.
The piano here is sparse, uneven, its fragile voice occasionally interacting with sections of the orchestra that emerge from the tense silence for momentary dialogues.
The orchestra and the piano play against each other like wind and rain in a tornado, ratcheting up the tension until Rouse's trademark brass and percussion come in at full blast, releasing a tremendous amount of energy that threatens to overwhelm the soloist.
