 Hopkinson Smith - Reviews
Smith has said that "[b]ehind any guitar music is real silence.
The first, Hopkinson Smith Portrait, is a low-priced sampler comprising selections from his 20 solo recordings.
In general, live performances are superior to recorded versions, but--unless you're privy to a recital in some royal chamber--recordings of lute music may be the best way to appreciate it fully.

ITG News: Philip Smith, Joseph Turrin at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville
As an homage to his father, Phil chose the cornet on which to perform this solo, and the change in timbre from the traditional Bb or C trumpet selection used by many performers of this piece gave the music a much warmer and richer sound quality.
Smith then joined the band and performed Turrin's Escapade (newly arranged for wind band from the original brass band version) with the composer conducting.
Smith returning to the cornet in James Curnow's stirring Concert Piece for Cornet and Band.

 Philip CATHERINE : Biography
In 2003 Philip Catherine has mainly performed with his trio, a formula he particularly likes as it gives him the rhythmic support as well as freedom to unfold his wide palette of musical styles - from that irresistible groovy rock sound to the broad lyrical phrases of which he is a master.
Being from a musical family (his grandfather was first violin with the London Symphony Orchestra), he developed a musical ear from an early age.
Steeplechase Records : their catalog includes 8 albums of Philip CATHERINE as a sideman with Dexter GORDON, Niels H.O. PEDERSEN etc...

Suicide Page in Fuller Up, Dead Musician Directory
Smith's songs often were compared with those of Alex Chilton, Nick Drake and the Beatles, his favorite band.
Smith subsequently signed with DreamWorks Records and recorded two albums; "XO'' (1998) and "Figure 8'' (2000) continued his critical winning streak, and took him to the middle reaches of Billboard's Top 200 albums chart.
Smith was a favorite of rock music critics who admired his often dark, seemingly confessional songs, but he enjoyed only modest commercial success.

 NEWMAN,PHILIP
Young Philip Newman was on the road to success when he entered the Manchester College of Music to study with the Great Russian violin pedagogue Adolf Brodsky.
On listening to recordings of Ysaÿe it is possible to detect his influence in Newman's style and manner of performance.
In 1937 Philip Newman began his long service as a judge of the Concours Musical International Reine Elizabeth which had replaced the Ysaÿe Violin Competition.

The top musicians were nominated by their school and private music teachers to submit an audition tape.
Not only is he a first class musician but he relates well to our teenaged orchestra members and is an excellent teacher.
And, of course Phil Smith, who has so ably led GBYSO to its current best-ever state of fiscal and managerial health.

 Review Archives
ome musicians who have already researched the outer limits of jazz and improv music are still looking for new areas to investigate.
Creations like that make those tracks where Gebbia’s soaring alto lines interact with Smith’s modulated arco and pizz bass appear to be traditional avant-garde music, if that isn’t an oxymoron.
Starting with an infant cries, she turns to a child’s singing and nursery rhyme recitation as the percussionist is replaced by Smith and Nunn on the following track, “Renatzu Riga”, and her run-on vocal reconstitutes itself into what appears to be Sicilian curses.

The Official Suzanne Vega Website .::. Articles and Interviews: 1992
Contributed lyrics for two songs on this album by Philip Glass.
This album marks a stylistic departure for Suzanne, who has already proven herself to be wildly diverse, working with such artists as Lenny Kaye from the Patti Smith Group, Philip Glass, Arthur Baker, They Might Be Giants, The Lemonheads, and the ubiquitous DNA of "Tom's Diner" fame.
Collection of "Tom's Diner" covers from around the world including DNA remix that was a worldwide hit.

ITG Web Site - 2004 Ellsworth Smith Competition Report
Smith's tone quality was centered and strong throughout this thrilling performance.
On John Philip Sousa's Stars and Stripes Forever, one wonders, "Who will play the famous piccolo solo near the end of the full band version of the work?" In a brass band, one might assume that an E-flat cornet would take up the task.
All three performers showed signs of how long and grueling the competition had been with control and accuracy issues, proving that even at this high level, a musician is still a human being after all.

CD Baby: BOHOLA: bohola (3) - from eire
bohola's key to their sound is the interplay between the musicians and the approach they take to their music.
Keane has performed and recorded with some of the best musicians in Irish music over the years including Liz Carroll, Michael Flatley, Mick Moloney, Eileen Ivers, and Seamus Egan.
Noted University of Limerick Professor, composer, and musician Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin praised Keane as the "savior of the piano accordion." Emusic described him as "one of the true giants of Irish traditional music of the past fifty years."

Amazon.ca: Music: Philip Smith, Principal Trumpet, New York Philharmonic [Import]
The unabashed lyricism of Philip Smith's trumpet is clearly defined in a set of three songs in beautiful arrangements.
Smith takes a simple song like "Amazing Grace" and makes something truly memorable of it.
The highlight of this collection is easily Eric Ewazen's Trio for Trumpet Violin and Piano.

Center for Cultural Sociology > Annual Conference 2004
Through this analysis, I hope to "bring musicians back in" and make a case for social performance theory as a promising new direction in music sociology.
We should not simply assume that in playing musical texts, musicians provide the final stage of production.
This perspective does not capture the nature or the complexity of performing music.
