Pete Townshend - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Townshend remained the primary songwriter for the group, writing over 100 songs which appeared on the band's 10 studio albums.
Townshend suffers from partial deafness and tinnitus as a result of extensive exposure to loud music through headphones and in concert, including one notable 1970s concert where the volume level was claimed to have been measured at 120 dB 40 m from the stage.
Townshend's acoustic performances of three of his songs (including Pinball Wizard and Won't Get Fooled Again) were subsequently cited as having been the forerunner and inspiration for the "unplugged" phenomenon in the 1990's.

LONDON (AP) — Guitarist Pete Townshend has warned iPod users that they could end up with hearing problems as bad as his own if they don't turn down the volume of the music they are listening to on earphones.
Townshend, 60, guitarist in the 60s band The Who, said his hearing was irreversibly damaged by years of using studio headphones and that he now is forced to take 36-hour breaks between recording sessions to allow his ears to recover.
Pete Townshend's intuition is that there is terrible trouble ahead for those who listen to their iPods on a high volume level.

Blogcritics.org: Home Music Recording, And The Album That Launched It
Townshend may have been one of the first musicians to actually "write" songs on multi-track recorders and present them to his band, rather than simply relying on paper and pencil, or simply strumming a guitar and singing.
Townshend used home recording technology beginning with the first songs he wrote for The Who in the mid-1960s.
The recordings on the Scoop series are notable for a number of reasons--they highlight Townshend's sheer love of music and the recording process, and they allow him to release material too different (either stylistically, or because it's too light or ephemeral) to appear on any of the Who's albums, or his regular solo albums.

Townshend is partially right about "Won't Get Fooled Again": while it's true that the lyrics of the song are "against" revolution, the music -- especially the use of sequenced synthesizers -- is clearly revolutionary, or, rather, was clearly revolutionary for the time at which the song was released.
The listener doesn't need to be "convinced" by the song (what a ridiculous idea!); the listener need only feel it.

The Who -- which kept its original lineup intact until Moon's death in 1978, at which point Small Faces drummer Kenny Jones joined the band -- was a group of strong-willed individuals who often clashed (Townshend and Daltrey's bitter spats, sometimes played out onstage, were legendary).
