Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Emerging from the late 1970s Liverpool punk movement (key member Paul Rutherford had previously been in bands including The Spitfire Boys), FGTH are said to have taken their name from a newspaper headline referring to either Frank Sinatra or, more likely, Frankie Vaughan.
Rutherford, the other openly gay member of the band, released the ABC-produced album Oh World and a handful of singles before retiring with his partner to a farm in New Zealand to raise a family.
The band was fronted by Liverpudlian singer Holly Johnson, and was supported by Paul Rutherford along with Peter Gill, Mark O'Toole and Brian Nash.

 EMANEM 4082: PAUL RUTHERFORD
This CD is a celebration of the trombonist's music and the impact the British improvisers that came of age in the late 60s and early 70s had on the younger American generation.
From the mid-1960s, Paul Rutherford and Lol Coxhill were two of the leading lights in the revolution that transformed Free Jazz into Free Improvisation.
Rutherford is still in very good shape: inventive, resourceful and absolutely capable of keeping an improvisation interesting for that long.

Rutherford issued some compelling solo sessions in the '70s, then formed a new edition of Iskra 1903 with Guy and Phil Wachsmann in the '80s.
Rutherford also played with the London Jazz Composers Orchestra, Globe Unity Orchestra, and Tony Oxley septet, as well as with Evan Parker and Paul Lovens.
He met John Stevens and Trevor Watts in the RAF, and they co-formed the Spontaneous Music Ensemble in 1965.

 EMANEM 4019: PAUL RUTHERFORD
This album was the first of Rutherford's solo work to be recorded, and is an excellent representation of his music in 1974.
Paul Rutherford may be less well known than some of his old partners in arms like Evan Parker and Derek Bailey, but on this live solo recital he sounds every bit as original, compelling and creative.
The trombonist follows his own agenda, constantly choosing the direction the listener didn't think of, slipping from one approach to the next, adding colours and even a bit of humour, something inevitable with an instrument that has a reputation to be funny.

Meticulous attention was paid to packaging and artwork, and one result was the album The Last Supper, a duet with Kondo, being chosen for a hard-cover coffee table volume collection of artistic album covers.
Sporting a black suit and tie no matter what the occasion or outside temperature, German drummer Paul Lovens is a much-loved and highly respected presence on the European improvising scene, and since the mid-'90s, has also begun performing regularly in the United States as interest in the art of European improvisers increased stateside.
In the mid-'70s he began his own vinyl label imprint, Po Torch, releasing a series of percussion duets with British drummer Paul Lytton, among other projects.

Even though Paul Young's vocal presence is greatly missed, and the Mechanics will never be quite the same without him, Mike Rutherford and Paul Carrack have nonetheless created what is quite possibly the best Mechanics album to date, and I tip my hat to both of them with the utmost respect and admiration.
The creativeness behind this track, with killer guitar riffs from Rutherford, the heavy percussion, ominous piano and synths, tape loops, and the occasional vocal drop-ins from Carrack, is simply astonishing.

Intentionally (free) jazzier than most of Rutherford’s music, the piece allows the drummer to call upon more of his Jones than his Stevens’ lessons.
The first tracks, which are in essence one long improvisation from a 1983 British jazz festival were originally issued as an Ogun cassette -- doesn’t that sound antebellum-like now.
Known as a jazz-rocker, drummer Nigel Morris, who had studied with Philly Joe Jones and John Stevens -- Rutherford’s early employer in the Spontaneous Music Ensemble -- is sensitive to the leader’s moves and breaks up the time with a variety of stratagems.

 Evan Parker, Waterloo 1985
Yet Parker and Rutherford know exactly what he's doing: he's working at the quick-moving details in the music while keeping a watchful drumstick on the larger picture.
The rhythm drifts rather than swings (even when it drifts hard, if such a thing is possible) and the bluesy feel of much free music is replaced with a convoluted linearity more reminiscent of early Coltrane than the later incarnation.
This is a single, hour-long improvisation from players who will be familiar to many readers, in a setting that is similar in sound to saxophonist Evan Parker's celebrated trio with Paul Lytton and Barry Guy.

New Perspectives on Paul, by N.T. Wright
Here a Pauline exegesis rooted in Paul’s own understanding of Jewish scripture and tradition must challenge the fuzzy thinking that, listening to yesterday’s papers, I discover characterised most of the great, but basically Latin-speaking, theologians.
Indeed, listening to yesterday’s papers, it seems that there has been a massive conspiracy of silence on something which was quite clear for Paul (as indeed for Jesus).
For Paul, ‘justification’ is something that follows on from the ‘call’ through which a sinner is summoned to turn from idols and serve the living God, to turn from sin and follow Christ, to turn from death and believe in the God who raised Jesus from the dead.
