Passacaglia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Halvorsen also composed a passacaglia that is based on a Handel theme and written for a duet of violin and viola, considered among the most popular pieces for both instruments due to its simplicity and depth.
In music a passacaglia (French: passacaille, Spanish: pasacalle) is a musical form and the corresponding court dance.
One of the best known examples of a passacaglia in western classical music is the one in C minor for organ by Johann Sebastian Bach, BWV 582.

Bach - Passacaglia and Double Fugue In C Minor
This astonishing Passacaglia is in fact one of the mightiest of all Bach's creations, and a wonderful example of a favorite method of musical variation and, development in the period before the establishment of the classic symphony.
These are the beams and arches of the music that was to follow.
The grandest architectonics and fantasy of a staggering sublimity characterize the great Preludes and Fugues and the C minor Passacaglia.

 J. S. Bach Passacaglia in C-Minor: Analysis
The passacaglia was originally a Spanish dance in 3/4 time and in the minor mode (Bach titled a couple of his suite movements "Passacaglia," which do not use variation techniques).
The Passacaglia is essentially an improvisatory piece most likely written to further Bach's fame as a 32-year-old virtuosic performer and improviser.
This method for obtaining sound was intended for my students who have access to these disks, but you may listen in if you wish.

 Program Notes - Printer-Friendly
The Passacaglia is in the tradition of chamber music for large orchestra as invented by Berlioz and continued in the “Gretchen” movement of Liszt's Faust Symphony, as we find it surprisingly often in Wagner and constantly in Mahler (to whom Webern felt very close).
The effect of the beautifully spaced first D major chord is like that of the blissfully serene turn to major in Bach's D minor Chaconne for solo violin.
And Webern will have carefully studied the passacaglia finale of the Brahms Fourth Symphony, “new music” in 1908.

Monthly Discussions - No. 4 - Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor BWV 582
I have listened to three versions of the passacaglia.
I have enjoyed Rübsam's performance's of the English and French suites on Naxos - they seem refreshingly unmannered and straightforward - and if this were the only performance of the passacaglia I had heard I would be impressed with the music. But as it is I am disapointed with this version.
Like Don Satz, I think my favorite recording is by Biggs, but i also like the one by Schweitzer, a slow, lumbering sound.

DSCH 20 Shostakovich CD Reviews - Ronald Stevenson, Passacaglia on DSCH
The classic commercial recording of the Passacaglia on DSCH is that made by John Ogdon in the 1960s.
Following the 1963 premiere, the composer made a private recording, issued in an edition of 100.
The opening is cool, the acoustic dry, but the attention to the quieter, reflective music that follows is matchless, a perfect foil for the troubled nature of much of the more overt writing in the Passacaglia.

The Classical Free-Reed, Inc. CD Review of Nina & Lena: Vitebsk, Minsk, Moscow
There is a slight pause in the music and I sat in eager expectancy, waiting for the second half of the passacaglia -- the fugue -- to begin.
I recommend this CD for all lovers of the classical accordion; it is a superb demonstration of the art of duet playing.
When I received Nina & Lena's CD in the mail, I looked at the program and wondered, "how would they perform the Bach Passacaglia?" It is difficult enough to play these works on the instrument Bach intended: the pipe organ.

Passacaglia, Fugues & Fantasies - Bach on the Pedal-harpsichord
In his Passacaglia & Fugue in c minor, Bach shows us clearly the two forms, of Passacaglia, and Fugue side by side in a piece of music which has rarely been excelled in contrapuntal and musical power.
Like the Fugue, the Passacaglia was a popular format during the baroque era, in which the melody is generally featured as a repeating bassline, though it can appear in any voice.

The wheels of the passacaglia then begin to turn and over it melodies develop contrapuntally.

The Passacaglia was written in 1927 in anticipation of the 100th anniversary of Schubert's death, and is subtitled '44 variations, cadenza and fugue on the opening theme of Schubert's Unfinished Symphony'.
The piece has earned a reputation as being among the most difficult in the repertoire, partly because of Horowitz's flippant comment that it required six hands to play it - it is in fact superbly pianistic.
It has a beautiful slow movement, a delightful scherzo, and a monumental 20-minute finale that includes a fugue on the name B-A-C-H. It deserves to be far better known.
