Parliament (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
With the ensuing albums, Parliament became one of the most respected bands on the 1970s, and are now recognized as one of the forefathers of funk music.
Soon, Parliament was created in addition to Funkadelic and the two bands consisted of essentially the same people (see List of P Funk members), though both released albums under their respective names.
With only moderate success, Funkadelic signed with Casablanca Records as Parliament, releasing "Up for the Down Stroke" (off the album of the same name) which reached #10 on the RandB charts but peaked at #63 Pop.

 Funk Page -- PARLIAMENT
Parliament's ninth album, Gloryhallastoopid (Or Pin the Tale on the Funky), was released later in 1979 and showed a bit of a slip in the previously unstoppable Clinton machine.
Early in 1979, Parliament hit number one yet again with "Aqua Boogie," from its eighth album, Motor-Booty Affair.
It topped the R&B charts for three weeks, and was followed by the number 27 single, "Funkentelechy." The LP reached number 13 on the Pop charts and became Parliament's second platinum album.

 Rolling Stone Online Biography
After the first three albums, the dancibility of the band began to increase, but by 1975 things changed: two extremely talented musicians, saxaphonist Maceo Parker and bassist Boosty Collins, joined the ensemble, stealing thunder from the excellent guitar and keyboards that were emphasized in Funkadelic.
Parliament was resurrected in 1974 as a more radio-friendly answer to Funkadelic, with an emphasis on horns and bass rather than guitars, gospel-style vocals, and a cartoonish, science-fiction image.
Their 1967 single "(I Wanna) Testify" reached the Top 20, but the band found themselves embroiled in a legal dispute with another band called the Parliaments, and were unable to release a follow-up.

Parliament: 'Up for the Down Stroke', 'Chocolate City' and 'Mothership Connection': Pitchfork Review
Up for the Down Stroke was the band's first LP after their rebirth (on the newly created Casablanca imprint, also home to Kiss, and later one of the most prominent disco labels), and was the dawn of a new sound for Clinton's band.
The band had already been playing this tune for a few years on the road with Funkadelic, and along with the incredible, gospel-tinged "Whatever Makes My Baby Feel Good" (featuring Eddie Hazel's always acidic guitar) are songs that could well have appeared on Funkadelic LPs from the previous couple of years.
That said, Funkadelic was never a pop band, and when Clinton got the rights to The Parliaments' name back, he made a concerted effort to make that band (rechristened Parliament) a better fit for a wider audience.

 Parliament Funkadelic
Also in 1976 the gold album The Clones of Doctor Funkenstein was released with the songs "Do That Stuff" and "Dr. Funkenstein." In 1977, Parliament released "Flash Light," their first #1 R&B hit.
Funkadelic continued to release albums but Parliament also returned in 1974 with Up For the Down Stroke on Casablanca Records.
Clinton and numerous P-Funk members released an album as the P-Funk All Stars in 1983.

 P-Funk
Parliament's final album came out in 1980, and Funkadelic's in 1981.
By 1993, most of the old Parliament and Funkadelic albums were re-released, leading to a new emergence of funk and a new tour by the P.Funk All-Stars.
He wrote many of the guitar riffs for the band, and did some singing as well.

 hip online: artists: parliament
Parliament and Funkadelic frequently resorted to allegorical concept albums to make larger points about societal injustices and ways in which a community of like-minded souls could liberate themselves from its constrictions.
During the 1970s, Parliament, Funkadelic and a host of related offshoots placed roughly 60 singles on the RandB charts and were among the hottest attractions on the concert circuit.
Meanwhile, Funkadelic gelled on one of the finest funk albums ever produced, One Nation Under a Groove, whose title track was a rousing anthem of union and community.

 The P-FAQ!
Parliament continued the success in '78 with a # 1 hit in "Aqua Boogie".
The last Parliament album was in 1980, and the last Funkadelic album was in 1981, although most of the material had been recorded a year or two before that.
The band became wildly popular, touring with Parliament-Funkadelic and later on their own, and reached their zenith with the #1 hit, "Bootzilla".

KLUDGE MAGAZINE - George Clinton & Parliament/Funkadelic: Syracuse NY - Concert Review
The band began with a dull tune that sounded more like a sound check than a song.
Various band members walked on stage, adding to the original 6-piece line up of three guitarists, a keyboardist, bassist and drummer.
Strange enough, some band members aren’t even musicians.

 Making It Funky
The plotlines of Parliament's late-'70s concept albums allegorize the spreading of The Funk.
Parliament's concerts in the late 1970s would begin with a strange monologue, spoken in the manner of the opening narration to a science fiction epic.
Recording instead for the small Revilot label, the Parliaments had their first hit in 1967 with "(I Just Wanna) Testify." Reaching #3 on the RandB charts and #20 on the pop charts, it would be Clinton's biggest commercial success until the mid-70s.

Washington City Paper's Desert Island Setlist: Last Call
This band is so aggravating to love--what is it, seven years since their last album?
I have also assembled an all-star band, led by John Prine, the Jordanaires, Waddy Wachtel, Nancy Griffith, and the Chieftains.
Since this is a mythical situation, my band will be mythical.

Jared's Pick - Album Reviews: Funkadelic - Maggot Brain
Eddie Hazel’s Hendrix-meets-Sun Ra cosmic guitar gets top billing in the 10 minute title cut; Clinton’s band of gypsies all but leaves the room as Hazel beams in a languorous solo that is equal parts alien transmission and lysergic lullaby.
On a later album, Funkadelic would ask “Who says a funk band can’t play rock?”, but Maggot Brain proves the question wasn’t only rhetorical, it was a laughing dismissal of non-believers: Funkadelic rocks like an asteroid belt.
If hip-hop hasn’t yet thoroughly mined these dirty slabs of vinyl, it’s only because Funkadelic is a complex, murky stew of funk that isn’t easily sliced up into sample-ready jams.

 Britannica.com: Head Sounds: Psychedelic Rock
By 1970 Clinton was producing albums for both the renamed Parliament and Funkadelic--essentially the same entity recording for different labels.
Performing throughout the northeastern United States and recording in Detroit, the group began to emphasize its backing band, Funkadelic.
Success came in 1976 with the release of Parliament's album Mothership Connection and the single "Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof Off the Sucker)," which earned a gold record.

Parliament - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This style of two houses is called bicameral; also parliaments with only one house exist (see unicameralism).
The British Parliament is often referred to as the "Mother of Parliaments," (in fact a misquotation of John Bright, who remarked in 1865 that "England is the Mother of Parliaments") because the British Parliament has been the model for most other parliamentary systems, and its Acts have created many other parliaments.
