 The DartBoard Studios
Overdubs are basically audio tracks recorded over existing tracks.
Overdubs are used on virtually every commercially released album to achieve a clean sound (especially on vocals).
Using the Mac G4 and the Digi001 we can record eight new audio tracks at a time, but using overdubs we can record up to 24 tracks by doing multiple passes on a song.

Overdubs are tracks that you add to the basic tracks.
Sometimes overdubs are used to replace basic tracks.
Mixdown is the process by which the various basic tracks and overdubs, collectively known as the multitrack master, are mixed together in the computer or through a mixing console to create a stereo mix master.

 Recording Tips
Overdubs are common for lead and backing vocals, solo guitars, violins and any extra parts or sounds you wish to add to the song.
Overdubs are any part of a song recorded after the initial ‘live’ recording.
At this stage we need to discuss and decide which instruments/parts to record ‘live’ and those to be overdubbed.

 Session Tutorial-Doing Overdubs
A track is capable of containing one separate musical performance in the song.
Some tracks can be played back while others are being recorded; this is called an overdub.
This leaves you 9 tracks left to overdub on.

 Pegboy 1008
Overdubs were recorded at various speeds lending a unique quality upon playback.
To achieve these "overdubs," John would play back a previously recorded performance through an amplified speaker, and record the ambient song along with a new live performance (the overdub) onto a second tape machine.
The Beatles then overdubbed swordmandel, additional percussion, and George's guitar solo onto track 2.

 The Soul Stirrers
It's possible the overdubbed version was used for the vinyl LP version of the "Two Sides Of Sam Cooke" album, but was replaced with the no-overdub version for the CD release.
The only thing I can surmise is that the overdubbed version appeared on the vinyl LP version of "The Two Sides Of Sam Cooke," but the original, no-overdub version was used for the CD.
The liner notes to the 1970 release "The Two Sides Of Sam Cooke" indicate the song was first released on that disc, but the version heard on that CD is identical to the one on the "Last Mile Of The Way" CD.

Django : Ska, Rocksteady & Reggae
This is another of the albums most striking alternatives, with a further different vocal and the abscence of the piano overdubs standing out.
Released on 26th March 2001 was the deluxe re-issue edition of the Wailers Island Records debut, Catch A Fire.
The unreleased version of the album reveals much about the released version, as it strips away the overdubs laid in London by guitarist Wayne Perkins and keyboardist John Bundrick to unveil previously unheard intricacies.

 The Picks
FACT EIGHT: 12 more of the new overdubs were released for the first time in 1992 in a 24-song album called "Buddy Holly and the Picks: 'The Voices of the Crickets'" (Pick Records; PLP, PCD, PCA 2221; 1992, USA).
This album, with its 12 new overdubbed releases, brought the all-time release total of Buddy Holly songs with Picks' harmony backgrounds to 30.
It contained 21 latterday overdubs, excluding the original 9 overdubs released on the Holly "Crickets" album of 1957.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The final session for the song, held on the evening of February 10, 1967, was to record the orchestral overdubs with a forty-piece ensemble, conducted by McCartney and drawn from members of the London Symphony Orchestra.
The session was also in effect the wrap party for the album, and the Beatles invited a number of special guests for the occasion including Donovan and members of The Rolling Stones.
Although allegations were made by the British Broacasting Coroporation (who banned the song from airplay) that the song implicitly advocated drug use both McCartney and Lennon have flatly denied this claim.

1970 - Phil Spector finishes the orchestral overdubs for the upcoming Beatles album, Let it Be, including the songs " Let it Be ", " Across the Universe ", and " The Long and Winding Road ".
This causes controversy among Beatles fans who feel that Phil Spector has overproduced the album.

the problem with overdubs on a live cd is that it defeats the purpose of the live cd...
if shit is overdubbed, then the concert experience is ruined...

DTFAQ.com - Are there any overdubs on DT's live albums?
There was also a screw-up in Through Her Eyes which was not fixed because Mike wasn't available on the day the overdubs were recorded (both his and JP's back-up vocals at the concert for that song were through the same mic, so it wasn't possible to just re-record JP).
Live at the Marquee : A significant chunk of the vocals were overdubbed, as well as (I believe) some of the guitars.
Are there any overdubs on DT's live albums?

 Overdubs displaced (Sonar 3)
I'm sure it's user error but when I start recording in the middle of a previously recorded track, the playback of the new material is displaced in time.
Sounds to me like you're not using the conventional method (auto-punch) to record in the middle of the pre-recorded track.
I play the guitar, and a lot of the parts are very intricate (at least to me).

All The World's A Stage Rush Rush's excellent first live album sans overdubs
This album is a great live album and has no overdubs at all and was the only raw sounding live Rush disc until 1998's triple CD Different Stages and the other triple live CD, 2003's Rush in Rio which are classics as well.
Rush's fifth album(and first of five live albums) entitled All the World 's a Stage was released in October of 1976.

We'll see, there are still more overdubs to record (I'm thinking percussion, vocals, and...
Maybe we'll record an album instead of an EP, you can never tell in advance, but for now I think we'll have to take it easy: we're in a new phase of our music and I think it's good to let the audience get familiar with our new sound by means of an EP.

To say its been overdubbed would suggest the band have gone back in to the studio and replaced any errors with new takes - which they did not.
A good overdub example on Live Killers is Love of my life, I think the original is from Frankfurt where Fred's voice 'cracked' a few times during this song.
You are absolutely correct, the only difference is whether the repairs were made with specifically recorded material (studio overdub)or other live versions from the same tour were used.

 Freeing Up CPU For Overdubs
I was just wondering, say I have 10 tracks recorded, and I want to add a new audio track.
You might consider doing a "rough mix" stereo track that has all of your 10 tracks mixed down to one stereo track, and then archiving all of the original 10.
Make sure, though, that your rough mix is not being recorded back onto your new track.

The Ledge - Soundstage CD Overdubs! You wont believe it!
BUT for the CD release, which I listened to, they did overdub it.
They overdubbed it with the part from "The Dance." They took the same riff and just plopped it in there!!
I can still hear Stevie's non-existant harmony in some of the stage songs, at the concerts.

 When Jokes Attack
This may have been my favorite day of recording, as we focused almost exclusively on guitar overdubs, and finally got to hear an idea of how the finished songs were going to really sound.
All my overdubs were done on my own guitar...
Eventually I finished off my guitar overdubs, and returned to vocal tracking.

Dylan Pool :: Dylan Pool discussion :: Bob's vocal overdubs
Only vocal overdubs seem to be unusual until the 80s.
I think for example the solo guitar on "Desolation Row" was overdubbed.
Bob Dylan stood at a craggy opposite extreme, turning out records in a few days’ time and avoiding any vocal overdubs until “Blood on the Tracks,” the fourteenth record of his career.

Transformations - online journal of region, culture and Society
The CD with all the added Hula vocals was then sent to Cairns where engineer Nigel Pegrum had to extract the 'new' overdubs and match them with the original music tracks, Seaman Dan's English vocal which had been done in the interim, and the Torres Strait Islander backing vocals.
Overall, Tony Subam had a range of skills and contacts that made it feasible to send the CD of the song to PNG with confidence the overdubs would be not only technologically useable but also musically and culturally appropriate.
As a result of the production schedule, the location of the collaborators and what technology they had access to, different versions of the song circulated.
