Ostinato - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ostinatos are to classical music what riffs are to popular music.
They have a large role in improvised music such as in jazz and Baroque music.
While most of the performers were not able to notate music, mainly the surviving records prove that early jazz music used a technique similar to ostinato.

Ostinato, an Italian word meaning "stubborn" (compare English obstinate), is to classical music what riffs are to popular music.
An ostinato is a bit of melody, a chord progression, or a bass figure that is repeated over and over as an accompaniment.
Ostinati are frequently used in Baroque music, where the basso continuo invites the use of the technique (as a ground bass), and fixed forms such as the passacaglia and the chaconne require it.

The music, by 16th and 17th century Iberian composers, has a Renaissance lilt; the atmosphere feels warmed by a Spanish sun.
