Its origins are based in Africa, and it arrived on American shores during the slave trade.
The song structure is simple--much of classic blues is based around a three-chord, 12-bar progression that leaves room for boundless improvisation--and it serves as a foundation for much of today's popular music.
Acoustic country blues, often from the Mississippi Delta, blossomed during the 1920s, while during the '40s the electric guitar took the music in wild new directions (including north to Chicago).

 MSN Encarta - Country Music
Musically speaking, country music is one of the simplest styles to create and one of the least intimidating to listen to, features that contribute to its popularity.
Born out of the folk music of Southern Appalachia, country music encompasses the styles known as Western swing, honky-tonk, bluegrass, rockabilly, and new country.
In country, the primary purpose of the musical elements of harmony, melody, and rhythm is to showcase the lyrics without distracting from them.

Rock and roll emerged as a defined musical style in America in the 1950s, though elements of rock and roll can be heard in rhythm and blues records as far back as the 1920s.
Early rock and roll combined elements of blues, boogie woogie, jazz and rhythm and blues, and is also influenced by traditional Appalachian folk music, gospel, Hillbilly and country and western.

 rock music on Encyclopedia.com
Essentially hybrid in origin, rock music includes elements of several black and white American music styles: black guitar-accompanied blues; black rhythm and blues, noted for saxophone solos; black and white gospel music ; white country and western music ; and the songs of white popular crooners and harmony groups.
The music was filled with contempt for previous styles; its fast-tempoed songs, usually propelled by electric guitar, featured irreverant lyrics often obscured by the clangerous music.
A turning point in rock music occurred in the mid-1970s in the form of punk rock, which was a response to the stagnation of the genre and a nihilistic political statement.

Originally conceived as a tribute to the "Godfathers of British Blues," Cyril Davies and Alexis Korner, the album ended up as a more general celebration of the genre's origins and rich history.

What makes Knights of the Blues Table truly stand apart from other tribute records, though, is the obvious love and enthusiasm apparent in every performance.

Malcolm McLaren: Rhythm and blues, which was the basis of all English rock and roll in the 60s, really came out of the desperate search to associate yourself with the darkness and the existentially bored feeling of the fact that the only thing certain in the future was death.

Who Put the ROCK into the Roll?
Rock uses the familiar harmonies of Western music, notably the major key system with its three basic chords, the tonic, sub-dominant, and dominant (C, F, and G to those who play the guitar), enriched by microtonal inflections borrowed from the blues.
Of the many explanations for rock’s origins, I am fond of this one, not only for Leiber and Stoller’s verbal wit, but because they make us think back to the beginning (which, as other musical wisdom from 1959 has it, is “a very good place to start”).
The tempos of rock music, ranging from the slow ballad, to medium and fast dance time, are commonly set in duple meters (4/4 time and “cut time”) and make ample use of off-beat accents (apparent in American popular music at least since Stephen Foster and Louis Moreau Gottschalk).
