 orchestrion
This large instrument is a Model D Welte Cottage Orchestrion.  It was purchased in 1905 by Mary on her travels to Geneva, Switzerland from the George Baker Company for $500 dollars.  For that $500 dollars, Mary received the orchestrion and the two oak chests that contained 100 rolls of music.

For years, patrons had to rely on their memory of the musical experience of the sophisticated music box that industrialist Henry Clay Frick bought for $5,000 in 1892 on the urging of business partner Andrew Carnegie.

However, the days of orchestrions and coin-operated pianos were numbered during the 1920's.
Indeed, some of the more sophisticated orchestrions -- some of those produced in Germany during the 20th century being examples -- are to a human orchestra in apparent sound production what an Ampico, Duo-Art, or Welte reproducing piano is to a human pianist.
Hearing "If I Could Be With You One Hour Tonight" played on a snappy and well-regulated Seeburg KT Special or listening to "Turkey in the Straw" on a perky Coinola orchestrion is a musical experience that no collector should miss.

An orchestrion is a band in a box, a huge cabinet with a player piano and other automatic instruments inside--including hanging drums and triangles, a pipe organ, a violin, and a xylophone that plays like a machine gun.
Two lovers sit on a player piano bench, pumping the pedals with their feet and singing "I wanna hear it again, I wanna hear it again." Each time the song roll goes around, the two people get closer, until the piano collapses out of exhaustion.
The paper song roll sends pneumatic commands through the web of wires, tubes, and triggers that cover each instrument.

The Orchestrion Builders - A story of the Leopold King family
He opened the orchestrion and turned two wires, whereupon the orchestrion began playing, and the delighted butcher began dancing to the happy melody.
He was soon at work constructing a better and more advanced roll changing device, one that worked so that when one music roll had finished playing the next roll was able to play immediately, eliminating the awkward rewind break that would otherwise interrupt the flow of music.
Another time the acoustics in the room were so bad that Ernst had to make a plywood sound barrier, before the people in the room could hear the Paganini-Orchestrion N. A butcher and restaurant-keeper once threatened to kill Ernst, because of the orchestrion he was installing.

Reblitz also adapted European orchestrion arrangements, many of which were inspired by American dance band arrangements played by some of the best 1920's jazz bands and adapted to Weber, Hupfeld, Popper and other tracker scales.
The instrument plays a unique ten-tune orchestrated music roll created specifically for this new orchestrion with the help of noted music roll arranger Art Reblitz.
This allows the Banjo-Orchestra to play some of the finest music arranged for automatic musical instruments.

Removing the huge Welte Style 6 Orchestrion from Nidd Hall.
Cabinets full of type CF music rolls for the Welte Orchestrion get ready for the journey to the U.S. Note that the Welte is partially dismantled, stripped of all its pipework and main pipe chest.
Numerous copies of this professionally printed list of music rolls, dated April, 1924, were found in Nidd Hall, giving rise to speculation that the Welte might have been used for some type of concert.

 van der Reijden
Having seen and heard other pianos installed in orchestrions, I am pretty sure that the piano that I adapted for the Frati is a better piano than the original.
By the way, he told me, with a smile, that his father butchered orchestrions in order to sell the pianos.
Let me give you another example: The piano of the Frati had been thrown away so I bought a secondhand piano from a local piano dealer.

 Orchestrion
In order to show the scope of work that can be performed at the studio, I designed and built a type of player piano called an "Orchestrion." An orchestrion is a self-playing or mechanical orchestra.
My home-built instrument can only be described as a 7'-6", Stroud based, "O" roll, Duo-Art Orchestrion, that plays 65 and 88-note rolls, Duo-Art rolls (with full expression) as well as 65 and 88-note Themodist rolls (with limited expression.)
They had pneumatics made in the pipe chest.

Orchestrion Favorites: The Welte at the Pittsburgh Frick Museum
The Frick Welte Style No. 6 concert orchestrion was purchased in 1892 at the recommendation of Mr.
The music on this recording comes from rolls that are played for visitors to the Frick home on the grounds of the Frick Art & Historical Center.

 Orchestrions
The first orchestrions contained organ pipes which were supplemented by a few drums and cymbals so that the musical effect was that of a brass, or military band.
The later orchestrions contained a much greater proportion of percussion instruments and the effect was that of small dance orchestra.
Visitors not only enjoy the strident, rhythmic music which is so characteristic of this instrument, but they also delight in the moving picture and lighting effects which enhance the performance.

 Orchestrions, a brief summary
The heart of nearly all orchestrions were was an automatic piano.
Most of them were sold and became part of private collections, especially in the USA.
Thus it could happen that the famous Hupfeld orchestrion from the restaurant "de Postzegel" in 's-Hertogenbosch (the most elaborate orchestrion ever built) was sold to a collector in the USA around 1970 without any protest from the Dutch organ enthusiasts....

 Violano - vituoso
The works were at King Street Hammersmith and may also have supplied orchestrion rolls, Imhof and Mukle having converted to perforated music rolls in 1915.

They would sell it to the Museum if a realistic offer was made.

 Welte Style 2 Cottage Orchestrion
The Welte roll playing orchestrions are often considered the most desirable of the type, offering a far wider and more convenient choice of music than the older, barrel operated orchestrions.
The house remained uninhabited ever since, and the Orchestrion accordingly shows all the signs of 50 years of neglect, with surface rust showing on bright parts of the mechanism and woodworm attack in parts of the case.

 The Harmonie Orchestrion
One of the tricks we can do, is linking the Orchestrion to Georges Pell 48 Organ, via MIDI and playing both organs from the same music.

Orchestrion at the National Music Museum
Douglas and Phyllis Adam of Yankton, South Dakota, who donated this valuable piece of Americana to the Museum, promised that "nobody can listen to it without smiling," and they were right.
Exhibited in the Museum's Jeanne F. Larson Tea Room, just off the front lobby, the orchestrion delights visitors who can still hear it played for only a nickel.
Often called nickelodeons, because they play automatically each time a nickel is dropped into the slot, orchestrions were popular in restaurants, hotel lobbies, and saloons.
