ORATORIO - LoveToKnow Article on ORATORIO
174) in oratorio clearly show the limited rise from the, musical standards of opera, that was then possible where music was emancipated from the stage.
The narrative and the, parts of single speakers were sung in the Gregorian tones appointed in the liturgy.
Thus the settings of the P~ssion by Victoria and Soriano represent, in a very simple form, a perfect solution of the art-problem of oratorio, as that problem presented itself to an age in which dramatic music, or even epic music, would have been a contradiction in terms.

 The Oratorio
It is also claimed that he was the first to introduce the cantata as a form of church music, and the accompaniment of violins in motet performances.
Federici wrote two oratorios, Santa Cristina," and "Santa Caterina de Sienna" in both of which " interstitial " accompaniment is used for the first time; that is, the violins, instead of accompanying the voice, repeat portions of the melody in short symphonies.
Burney notes that in the close of this work degrees of diminution of sound, such as " piano," '` più piano," and "pianissimo," are used for the first time.

That was the birth of the Handel Oratorio Society which has provided a mystical experience for other listeners for 117 years.

 Emmanuel Music/Christmas Oratorio Program Notes
Bach's Christmas Oratorio has always seemed to me the ur-Christmas music, simply the profoundest thoughts on the matter ever uttered.
Bach gives a glow to the moment of his naming and the echoing of that name around the world that provides a whole new dimension to the Christmas story.
It is also includes his most extensive reuse of secular materials in sacred music.

 Oratorio
His "Hymn of Praise" (184o), a large choral work that is occasionally sung, well represents Mendelssohn's skill in combining vocal and orchestral effect.
In 1739 came "Saul" and "Israel in Egypt," the former best-known today for its famous "Dead March," the latter for the music descriptive of the plagues.
Riemann calls it a symphony-cantata, Parry says it "combines the qualities of a symphony and of an oratorio."

An oratorio is a composition for orchestra, soloists and choir.
Most oratorios have a biblical themes, but a number of composers, notably George Frideric Handel, wrote a number of works based on themes from Greek and Roman mythology.

 What is an Oratorio?
The sacred oratorio is a form of religious music with chorus, solo voices, orchestra and/or organ, independent of, or at least separable form the liturgy, and on a larger scale than the cantata.
Bach's Christmas Oratorio consisted of six parts in cantata form and had a total of 64 musical numbers.
The Oratorio had been established as a term for a musical genre in Italy around 1660.

Lasting some 30-60 minutes, they were performed in two sections, separated by a sermon; their music resembles that of contemporary operas and chamber cantatas.
Its success in a concert version prompted Handel to compose two more in 1733, and his other English oratorios followed in 1738-52.
The music of Haydn's late oratorios, The Creation and The Seasons, reflects his experience of Handelian oratorio in London.

It is a triumphant vindication of a subtle musical approach to an oratorio that admittedly is not an obvious candidate for Handel’s most subtle composition.
While it is unlikely that Handel used solo voices at all in either the original Funeral anthem or its oratorio offspring, Parrott’s use of them here does not rankle.
Parrott’s phrasing and shaping of the music reveals his keen awareness of rhetorical and refreshing elements in repertoire that can often descend into bombast.

Oratorio - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An oratorio is a large musical composition for orchestra, vocal soloists and chorus.
The peak period for composition of oratorios was the 17th and 18th centuries.
Most oratorios from the common practice period to the present day have biblical themes, but a number of composers, notably George Frideric Handel, wrote secular oratorios based on themes from Greek and Roman mythology.

But, even if Urmas had sung alone this album I would still have considered it (as well as the majority of you) a Rock Opera anyway since there is a lot of conceptual albums with one singer at the microphone that are hailed as Rock Operas.

Originally it was acted out with scenery and costumes, but gradually it became more commonly performed as a concert.
The form reached perfection in such works as Johann Sebastian Bach’s Christmas Oratorio (performed 1734–35), and George Handel’s Messiah (1742).
Its origins lie in the Laude spirituali performed by St Philip Neri’s Oratory in Rome in the 16th century, followed by the first definitive oratorio in the 17th century by Cavalieri.

Handel's oratorio a confrontation between hope and despair
Groag was the dramatic spark plug behind COT's staging of Handel's "Agrippina'' in 2003, a conception that had all the vulgar but fatally irresistible allure of "The Sopranos.''
So Groag faced the difficulty of staging a work with glorious music but virtually no dramatic movement.
He was a man of the theater in his genes, but when necessary he channeled that instinct for dramatic action into oratorios like "Messiah'' that bristle with musical evocations of furiously warring nations and sorrowing penitents.

He then addresses aesthetic theory and criticism, treats libretto and music in general, and offers detailed analyses of the librettos and music of specific oratorios (thirty-one in all) that are of special importance to the history of the genre.
Continuing the approach of previous volumes, Smither explores the oratorio in each language and geographical area by first examining the cultural and social contexts of oratorio.
As a synthesis of specialized literature as well as an investigation of primary sources, this work will serve as both a springboard for further research and an essential reference for choral conductors, soloists, choral singers, and others interested in the history of the oratorio.
