Another place it can be heard is in klezmer music, the music of the Jewish ghettos of Eastern Europe.
Because there are fundamental acoustic differences between the flute and the clarinet (the flute overblows at the octave and the clarinet at the twelfth) one could not put a strict Boehm system on the clarinet.
It is an essential part of the instrument's acoustical system and not just an ornamental addition.

A further legacy of Carl Baermann was the design of the Baermann system clarinet, which was the dominant clarinet in the German musical world in the second half of the 19th century, and is the direct ancestor of the instruments used in Germany and Austria today.

John Bruce Yeh Clarinet Chamber Music by Hindemith
His solutions for extending musical syntax will sound, to the casual listener, more evocative of Schoenberg than of Brahms, but the crucial elements of historical practice - key centers, elaborate imitative counterpoint, traditional forms, instrumental combinations - remain primary, albeit modified to accomplish the particular intentions of individual pieces.
One writer has observed that the composition is "a great work which requires more musical intelligence than technique, and is consequently not as popular as it deserves." It is nevertheless a staple of the clarinetist's repertoire, frequently undertaken at the college level as an early example of music by a master composer.
The Oehler is common in Germany but has been largely supplanted elsewhere by the Boehm system clarinet, which Yeh plays on the other pieces.
