Some of the songs from the first recording session were kept as B sides and later appeared on a special edition of the album.
Tim left the band while they were touring Europe in support of the Woodface album, but the seed for a brotherly project was sown, and in 1995, a lo-fi album simply called Finn was released (Finn Brothers in the US).

Neil Finn - a Review of The Phantom Tollbooth
The album kicks off with "Anytime," a song which deals with the unpredictability of life with an undeniably catchy melody and leaves the listener to ponder.
With Crowded House, Finn was as good as anyone in the 80s at writing pop tunes with lyrics that would stick with you long after the song was over.
You're probably familiar with their single, "Don't Dream it's Over." But before you dismiss Neil Finn and his former band as a one-hit wonder, there's some songs you should hear.

Neil's son Liam continues the musical tradition by playing in his own band, Betchadupa.

Review of Neil Finn's "One Nil"
One Nil (2001) is the second solo album from Neil Finn, the man who honed his famous pop sensibilities in two legendary bands, the first being Split Enz and the second Crowded House.
This time, though, Finn takes a clear step back to what he knows best- writing melodies that stand out for their sheer beauty, rather than the work of a clever production team.
It wouldn’t be a Neil Finn album unless there was an instant classic, and ‘Turn and Run’ fills that role for One Nil.

Neil Finn is a superb song writer, and like Andy and Colin, has that knack of communicating in words on a greater intellectual level than most song writers.
A plug for Neil here - Nettwerk Records is going to release the One Nil cd in April in the US and Canada - but it will be called  "One All" and will have some new songs on it to add some value for those who bought import One Nil's in N. America.
Neil's lyrics, for me anyway, have the ability to stand alone as beautifully introspective poetry while both Andy's and Colin's words evoke themes on a grander scale (not to say that particular songs don't have the ability to touch me personally).

Neil Finn's music career began when, as a New Zealand teenager, he was co-opted into his big brother Tim's band, the weird, new-wavish Split Enz.
Although Neil Finn has utilised a wide range of gimmickry and effects to cloak these songs, there is no escaping the fact that he can still dash off enough exceptional pop tunes to fill an entertaining album.
With Finn writing and singing all the songs on 'Try Whistling This', it is not that far from being another quasi-Crowded House album.

The good news is that it's a new Neil Finn album.
If a Neil Finn release isn't reason enough to buy, then a Neil Finn release with profits going to charity surely is! Shame on the BBC for failing to mention this.
Unlike some of the other reviewers here, I didn't expect a showcase of new material from Neil Finn and Co. What I expected (and got) was some old favourites from the extensive backcatalogue of songwriting talent assembled, delivered by virtuoso musicians (and some young blood).

Yet as Finn's voice carves a searing melody above a swaying rhythm, fleshed out by acoustic guitars and chiming piano in "A Life Between Us" -- "And we're staring at each other/ Like the banks of a river/ And we can't get any closer" -- you have to grin at Neil's parlous musical phrases.
Former Crowded House frontman Neil Finn still writes songs than can stun you with their beauty.
When Crowded House hit the charts in 1986 with "Don't Dream It's Over," a pop song with a melody as bracing as the wind, something in the familiar sound, a sensibility, anchored it in your jaded soul.

 Neil Finn
Another member of the '80s old guard has gone "techno." As a member of Crowded House and Split Enz, Finn was known for pop that owed much to early Beatles and perky new wave.
The crunchy beats and ambient tones may make this batch of dreamy skiffle numbers seem more epic, but Finn's yearning vocals and gentle guitar retain a coffeehouse intimacy.
But given all of these bells and whistles, most of the songs on the resulting album, Try Whistling This (Work), still sound like first-rate Finn.
