Oklahoma! - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The trend of "road show" stage-to-film musicals lasted into the early 1970's, the last of them being the film versions of "Fiddler on the Roof" and "Man of La Mancha", respectively.
The play was adapted into an Academy Award–winning musical film in 1955, starring Gordon MacRae, Shirley Jones (in her film debut), Rod Steiger, Gloria Grahame, and Eddie Albert.
The movie of "Oklahoma!" initiated a new trend - filming stage musicals virtually complete, and showing them as "road show" attractions (two performances a day, usually with an intermission, like stage productions).

RMA Music and Film 2001 - Hubbert
While his contemporaries Jaubert, Steiner and Copland were emphasizing the dramatic psychological and emotion possibilities of musical underscoring, Eisenstein focused almost exclusively on the "movement" of sound film, on the rhythmic and metrical coordination of music and images.
That Eisenstein may have been working on his alternative "movement" theory of film music even before the advent of sound film only cements his position as a significant and influential architect of film music and film music theory, a significance that has yet to be adequately recognized by film music historians.
The visual and musical montage Eisenstein helped to create in the score of Alexander Nevsky (1938), was a noticeable departure from the wall-to-wall-music model Steiner was standardizing at almost the same time in Hollywood in Gone with the Wind (1939).

In that sense they're not musical performances in which someone gets something out of it - they're more like ceremonies that take place, or have to take place, because of where things have got to [in the narrative, both visually and musically].
In all the 'Cremaster' movies the musical performances tend to have no audiences but are more like rehearsals, perfect repeated rehearsals.

 Chicago - Greg's Preview - Yahoo! Movies
Musicals, the sort where characters break regularly into song and dance, fell out of favor in film in the 1970's as a reaction against anything that didn't seem "realistic." Now, decades later, realism is not nearly as treasured in film, as fantasy (such as Lord of the Rings) and music both make their long-deserved returns.
Choosing to let the music do most of the talking, it stands out as a non-conventional trailer (ie, it doesn't say a thing about the story, really), and I think this trailer and film are going to connect with fans of musicals, Fosse, and the many stars involved.

DVD Verdict Review - My Sister Eileen
The basis for this 1955 film, a series of humorous autobiographical sketches by Ruth McKenney, inspired a stage play, a 1942 nonmusical film with Rosalind Russell, a Broadway musical (recently revived) called Wonderful Town, and this entirely separate big-screen musical.
Call it naïve optimism, but that's one of the things I enjoy most about musicals like this one.
A less intelligent script might have made her character into a dumb blonde, but Eileen is just as well-rounded a personality as Ruth, and the relationship between the two sisters is a large part of what makes this film so heartwarming.

Tommy was a 1975 musical film, based on The Who's 1969 "rock opera" concept album Tommy.
Unlike other films of rock operas (such as Pink Floyd's The Wall) the album is not dubbed over the film; the different actors sing the songs instead of The Who.
For the most part the original ideas of Tommy's unique perception (being that Tommy can experience the world in a spiritual manner that average humans cannot with all of their senses being assaulted by other sensations) are only hinted at in the film version.
