Music of Norway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Norway shares the Nordic dance music tradition with its neighbouring countries, where the Hardanger fiddle (hardingfele), the most distinctive instrument in Norwegian folk music, is used along with other fiddles like the standard violin and Setesdals-fele.
The hardingfele was part of kappleik musical contests from the late 19th century.
Prior to the 1700s, there is scant record of what kind of music was played in Norway.

Electronic music, serial and aleatoric music, sound effects, instrumental theatre, and experimentation with quarter tones are examples of the varied music forms and styles that the public had to appraise.
Folk music as a source was far from exhausted, but one characteristic of musical development in the interwar years was the need to build durable compositional techniques onto a base of folk music.
Norway has seven professional military bands, and there are a number of good chamber ensembles which have sprung from the musical environments surrounding the symphony orchestras.

 Norwegian Folk Music
Norwegian and Swedish folk music are unusual in European music culture because they developed most strongly among small farmers and cotters and have remained nearly independent of influences from newer musical fashions in Europe.
The music and dance have strong ties to one another; they are based on an older tonality, melodic structure, and rhythm patterns.
Gradually, as the tempered scale we know from classical music and newer musical fashions becomes more and more common in our daily musical experience, the old tonality and rhythm patterns will be in constant danger of disappearing, even though many people and organizations are working to protect them.
