Outside of Japan, the country's music has an image closely tied to its pop music, which is generally bubblegum songs with Japanese lyrics and often incomprehensible English refrains.
Westernized pop music is called kayōkyoku, which is said to have begun with "Kachūsha no uta" (1914; see 1914 in music).
Umui, religious songs, shima uta, dance songs, and, especially katcharsee, lively celebratory music, were all popular.

The Meiji government, with the intention of modernizing Japanese music, introduced the Western music instruction in schools, and in 1879, Izawa Shuji, a government bureaucrat who had studied in the United States, commissioned songs which were written using a pentatonic melody derived by exclusion of a major fourth and seventh.

The set has it all, great, good, bad, and awful in pretty equal amounts, but for the good and great alone it's worth the price, and the bad and awful are certainly enlightening and entertaining.
