Delusions of Adequacy Reviews - Mudhoney
Whatever it is, it makes for a terrific album.
You know this album is something different from the very first track.
This album features all of the things that have made Mudhoney a perennial favorite of indie-philes everywhere and it makes me very happy to see such a great veteran band (Mark Arm is 40!) continuing to push the envelope and deliver great music at each step of the way.

Also on the album are the melodic “Been a Son,” the early Nirvana-classic “Sliver,” the exciting b-side “Aneurysm,” and, for the completists, the garagey “Spank Thru,” one of the band’s earliest songs, and the album’s only ‘unknown’ song.
name another album in the past 20 years that was as powerful as this record, either sonically, lyrically, or influentially on a mainstream level.
The album’s other energy-blast is “Territorial Pissings,” which is about the only song on this album that could qualify as ‘punk’ (using the clichéd definition of “fast and aggressive rock song that speeds ahead so fast you’re ruining the seat cover”).

Mudhoney were the band that first took the sound of Sub Pop Records to wider shores.
Their latest release was in 2002 the album Since We've Become Translucent.
The first album was greeted as a comparative disappointment by many, though there were obvious stand-out tracks, like "When Tomorrow Hits”.

The title of the new album is a reference to the song "When Tomorrow Hits" from its first album, Mudhoney, begging the question of whether the band feels its time has come finally.
Their album will be released shortly after the film comes out in November.
While it is still very much a noisy garage-punk album, they have a more bluesy, low-end feel than Mudhoney's previous releases.

The problem with this album is that Mudhoney fails to hook the listener with its loose-but-loud format.
The best songs on the album pop up in the last half, with "Execution Style" and "1995." The latter is a six-minute jam session that catapults the listener back to the days when all the band members were in sync with each other.

The new album buoys even the band, and though modesty is the second Mudhoney credo (behind humor), the band members are even daring to acknowledge the merit of this record.

But the sad fact is, the rest of this album's cuts are lifeless husks by comparison.
And the worst part is that it sounds exactly like Mudhoney-- from the ultra-fuzzed guitars, to the primal percussion, to Arm's vitriolic, sneering vocals-- minus all the brute, unprocessed energy that originally made them so distinctive.
The title of this album reeks of self-reflection; I'm gonna guess Mudhoney became translucent, oh, probably right around October 26th, 1993, with the release of Five Dollar Bob's Mock Cooter Stew.

This is by no means their most hardcore album it is a mature, postgrunge album and Mudhoneys last ditch attempt to prevent themselves dying with grunge- and they should not have died because forget about grunge for a moment, this is one of the finest rock'n'roll albums I have ever heard.
This was to be Mudhoney's commercial breakthrough- the album was to make Mudhoney a great rock band(not just a grunge one) but it didn't happen and a year after this was released the band were dropped by Reprise records.
The old Mudhoney were once content to kick you in the gut, but now the grunge lads are discovering the complexities of their grimy sound, adding whinnying slide guitars, swampy bass lines, and emphatic vocals that steer the humor of one song into the pathos of the next.

But this album doesn't rush things, every song is giving space and time to breathe and develop -- check the insane, incessant "Sonic Infusion" or the harsh stoner rock of "Dyin' For It" for convincing evidence.
This is genre-defying, reckless and eccentric rock music, transcending the borders between garage and art, and between punk and metal.
