Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka Biography / Biography of Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka Biography
The composer Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka (1804-1857) was the earliest important musical figure of 19th-century musical nationalism in Russia--indeed, Russia's first musical personage of importance.
Glinka ventured also into symphonic music with overtures, the popular Kamarinsky (a fantasy on two Russian folk songs), and music for what has latterly been hailed as the "first Russian symphony" (1834; finished in 1948 by Vissarion Shebalin).
Glinka adopted the practice of the numerous Italians dominating music in St. Petersburg: using stories and tunes from Russian historical and folk sources.

Mikhail Glinka - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Glinka's The Patriotic Song, supposedly written for a contest for a national anthem in 1833, was the national anthem of the Russian Federation during 1990-2000.
The opera is characterized by its liberal use of folk songs as well as some innovative use of dissonance, chromaticism, and whole-tone scales.
Instead, the aristocracy, including the Imperial family, had been importing their music from the major musical countries such as Germany, France, and Italy and having native Russian composers study and write music mostly in Western styles.

 Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka, Composer
Glinka continued to use Russian history, folktales, poems and folk music as influences on his later operas, symphonic poems, chamber music, piano pieces and songs-- making his music distinctively Russian.
Glinka is considered to be the father of Russian Music, and his operas are said to mark the beginning of musical nationalism in Russia.
He was especially interested in the folk music of his native Russia, as well as the operas of composers Bellini and Donizetti, all of which became large influences on his later compositions.

Glinka again used Russian sources, but he also employed Eastern music and Viennese dance music.
The two major musical influences in his life were the folk music that he grew up with in the country and the operas of Vincenzo Bellini and Gaetano Donizetti.
This highly original music is interlarded, however, with set pieces in the ubiquitous Italian operatic style of the time.

Glinka was also interested in the popular music and dance of Spain, where he lived from 1845 to 1847, which inspired the overtures Jota Aragonesa and Night in Madrid (1851).
The music of his second opera, Russlan and Ludmilla (1842), based on a poem by the Russian poet Aleksandr Pushkin, was also drawn largely from Russian folk music.
Glinka established himself as the founder of the Russian national school of music, which was subsequently carried on by such composers as Aleksandr Borodin, Modest Mussorgsky, and Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov.
