 CANOE -- JAM! - Mike's new u-ziq
But, while the new album has introduced Paradinas to sets of ears outside the U.K.'s arcane dance music subculture -- one previously-released single that appears on the album, The Motorbike Track, was a dancefloor hit in Britain -- Fatboy Slim this ain't.
Mike Paradinas and I can agree on one thing: We both like his current album, Royal Astronomy.
Paradinas plans to satisfy his underground dance jones later this year with a non-u-ziq album released under the name Kid Spachula.

 µ-Ziq - Artist Profile - Stylus Magazine
When listening to a µ-Ziq track, it is unmistakably Paradinas.
Harsh drum and bass are mixed expertly with dynamic melody throughout the course of the album, creating a beautfiul soundscape that is full of soul and expression- in a genre of music thought to be devoid of such things.
The sound Paradinas is most well known for can be found on his 1997 Astralwerks release Lunatic Harness.

 tonevendor.com :. u-ziq - Bilious Paths 2xLP
Mike Paradinas will bringing his µ-ziq show stateside this summer in support of the release of this album, with a full country tour.
But much of the album charts new territory for Mike, like the opening track "Johnny Maastricht" which mixes the new 2-step "hardcore garage/rave" sound with his own trademark melodic sensibilities and the "Grape-Nut Beats" duo of tracks which mix 6/8 gabber-techno; old skool rave and nu-skool breaks with bassline ragga hardtek.
Planet Mu An amazing return to form from Mike Paradinas: 12 tracks of hard breaks influenced electronic music harking back to his various pasts (the track "Meinheld" recalls '97's Lunatic Harness remixed by Remarc and "My Mengegus" could have been off Tango N"Vectif).

 DESIGNER LABEL
Mike's bedroom studio is used not only to produce his own music, but also to edit, post-produce and master more or less every track Planet Mu releases.
Mike is also not shy about quite drastically editing his artists' tracks, if he feels they need it: "Sometimes a track might not deserve to be six minutes long, so I'll cut it down to three or four minutes.
Logic Audio is the sequencer of choice, and Mike admits that the main attraction is less the facility to record acoustic instruments and vocals, but more the extra potential for "mashing things up" afforded him by the various effects plug-ins available.

Mike didn't get much time to do the soundcheck, his own dressingroom is occupied by people of the Amsterdam conservatory, he has to do five unexpected interviews, a meal hasn't been arranged, the concert is going to be an hour later than planned and to top it all, the sampler is broken.
"In the coming months Mike is going to bring out sixteen new records," Jessica tells me. Mike: "But it's almost all old material." One of the records he's quite enthusiastic about he has recorded together with The Aphex Twin.
Because Mike Paradinas uses so many channels to send his music out into the world, he has an impressive number of pseudonyms.

As Paradinas began to reinvent the remix of pop songs as a "reworking-into-obliteration" movement, the pacifier crowd levitated out the door and the arthouse sub-jazz pack wafted in.
And Mike Paradinas is a talented— though geeky—little shit.
Paradinas holds onto a crooked-smile charm with this release, attacking his wrenching pathos to a more cohesive, larger groove than any singular track.

It even crops up on his new Kid Spatula LP on the track ‘Snork Maiden’, which ironically is one of the most arresting and out-there tunes on the album.
The unknown and the unpredictable within music can often intimidate and alienate listeners, and consequentially much of what we hear is unexciting.
The need to make beautiful and crazy music is paramount, the need to explain it isn’t, as Overload’s Richard Wilkes discovers.

As Paradinas states flatly, "I play a sampler; that's what the music's made on." (Or as he bluntly told Web zine Perfect Sound Forever, "It's not going to be me dancing and entertaining unless you want me to do a striptease or something.
Paradinas had also worked up more traditional (for him) percussion-based tracks for Royal Astronomy, which was released last July, but those songs were nixed at the insistence of American distributor Astralwerks.
But the seed of µ-Ziq's latest album was planted when Paradinas toured with Björk following Lunatic 's release.

Metro Times Detroit - Record Review - Dykehouse - Dynamic Obsolescence
Mike Dykehouse humbly slurred on about how he might be making a “bedroom listening” record for Mike Paradinas’ (aka mü-Ziq) label and how surprised he was by this prospect.
But it was Dykehouse ’s DEMF performance last year that turned the tables, surprising the other slack-jawed onlookers and me. A hyperactive, one-man electronic Metallica show — nothing like the album, but amazingly fun.
In 1996, Richard James (Aphex Twin) and Mike Paradinas co-wrote a jaunty album titled Expert Knob Twiddlers as Mike and Rich.

Paradinas reserved his most original and exciting work for major album releases such aas µ-Ziq.
Early µ-Ziq LPs were based around the most ear-splitting buzz-saw percussion ever heard (in a musical environment or otherwise), with fast-moving though deceptively fragile synthesizer melodies running over the top.
An early techno pioneer, he explored experimental electronica, while keeping his unusual ear tuned to melody, the occasional piece of vintage synthesizer, and distorted beatbox rhythms.

µ-Ziq: Tango n' Vectif: Pitchfork Review
Paradinas tempers the song's stark ambiance with simple, playful melodies, lending an emotive irony to the piece that is uniquely µ-Ziq.
A few weeks ago, Richard D. James' Rephlex label reissued this gem, compiling several unreleased tracks with material from the original CD and vinyl releases, as well as the long-lost "PHI*1700" single.
You can call this record groundbreaking, or relevant, or just a real riot to listen to.

The strange thing is that Paradinas doesn't seem particularly peeved about the leakage of the album.
The sonically effusive Paradinas is just as taciturn when it comes to the matter of the record's leak.
While his early experiments with four-track recorders and synthesizers conjured cold, angular, alien landscapes, and seemed designed for solitary listening in bedrooms much like the one they were composed in, by the mid-'90s Paradinas had infused his tunes with the street-wise swagger of drum 'n' bass.

Coda Agency - Mike Paradinas DJ Set (Mu-ziq/Planet Mu)
Though he may incorporate these elements in to his music, Mike never lets these influences smother a track entirely, instead mixing it all up into an end result which is both innovative and new.
1996 saw Paradinas join forces with Richard James for Aphex's one and only collaboration album Mike and Rich on Rephlex; it was also the year that Mike signed to Warp for his second Jake Slazenger album: Das Ist Ein Groovy Beat, Ja.
The album was preceded by a single The Fear, an infectiously haunting vocal track from Kazumi with pastoral strings underpinned by a Northern Soul mid-tempo shuffler rhythm, displaying the versatile nature of Paradinas' output.

Salon Arts & Entertainment Sharps & flats
Between then and now, the absurdly prolific Paradinas -- "µ-Ziq," pronounced "mu-zeek," is just one of his many handles -- has released records as Slag Boom Van Loon, Tusken Raiders and Kid Spatula, and remixed musicians like Björk, Whale and Mogwai.
Producer Mike Paradinas punched up rhythm tracks that reinvented themselves on the fly, rattling like hyper-agitated spray cans and breaking into spontaneous James Brown impressions; the underlying melodies waltzed woozily, like symphonies composed on an Atari console, forming patterns as stately and ingenious as cathedral architecture.
Jagged and wearying, "Astronomy"'s saving grace is its first single, the disarmingly lovely "The Fear," where vocalist Kazumi croons like Tracey Thorn on a ghost-busting mission, and Paradinas watches her back, marshaling a drum beat that's pure power pop.

-Ziq (mu-Ziq) is the e-handle of Mike Paradinas, a British deejay remixer-electronic musicians whose albums have garnered him a higher profile than most of the one man outfits who inhabit the white-label ghetto.
It's that variety, and Paradinas's willingness to be brief (he packs eight tracks into this 33 minute long EP) that make Brace Yourself more than dance floor fodder.

 Âµ-Ziq : Phi*1700 (U/V) - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Phi*1700 (U/V) is a decent sampler of early songs from Mike Paradinas, giving a good indication of the eclectic styles Paradinas would later master.
Phi*1700 (U/V) sees Mike Paradinas turning the dial through his later musical styles while making songs fitted with his trademark exuberance and crafty genius.
While the bubbly cacophony surrounding the keyboard seems inspired by Caustic Window, the delicate melody is pure µ-ziq.

 NME.COM - µ-Ziq - Royal Astronomy - 21 July 1999
You'd wonder, too, if you were the sort of person who likes to 'chat' about hidden Autechre tracks on the Warp Records website, why Mike Paradinas rarely applied the same carefree attitude and fondness for melody found in his numerous side-projects - Jake Slazenger, Kid Spatula, et al - to his higher-profile µ-Ziq alias.
The four previous LPs were challenging, of course, but only in that it was a challenge to sit through a whole hour's worth of breakneck drill'n'bass manoeuvres without ever biting your knuckles in agony.
You can understand, too, why listening to a µ-Ziq album has become less of a chore and a lot more enjoyable.

 J U N K M E D I A :: An interview with u-Ziq
The evening of our interview, Paradinas seemed weary, bemoaning the record industry's many faults and hinting at being frustrated by a lack of time to work on his own music with the responsibilities of fatherhood and his popular label, Planet Mu.
Paradinas' many albums as µ-Ziq (along with an ever-widening collection of pseudonyms such as Kid Spatula, Jake Slazenger, and Diesel M) reveled in IDM's sense of rhythmic complexity, but drew on an equally developed ear for expansive harmony.
"You just say 'stuff like the Aphex Twin', and they might have heard of him." It's a bold statement for Paradinas, who, along with friends and contemporaries like Richard James (Aphex Twin) and LFO, was one of that genre's defining artists in London's fertile dance music community of the early 1990s.

This results in some of his work (under various alises) sounding like that of a genius, whilst at other times the ramblings of a mad man. As much as this schizophrenic personality is what defines Mike Paradinas, it can sometimes make for frustrating listening.
For those willing to take the leap of faith required when listening to Paradinas the gems are well worth sifting through the detritous for.
Although snippets of voices crop up all over the album, there are two tracks that feature vocals by Japanese female artist Kazumi; an impressive singer whose style combines the technical dexterity of Bjork with the meaningless but nevertheless attractive meanderings of Liz Fraser.

Records: The foreseeable end of rock stars? Mu-ziq's 'Lunatic Harness' Sept 12, 1997
And the music is brilliant; u-ziq's latest album Lunatic Harness, released on Planet m /Hut and distributed in the US on Astralwerks (home to the infamous Chemical Brothers), is easily Paradinas' most mature, purposeful, and surprisingly listenable work to date.
And perhaps this parallel is not altogether far from accurate: "PHI*1700 (U/V)," from u-ziq's debut double album Tango N'Vectif, borrows its title from renowned sword and sorcery author Terry Pratchett.
According to an interview in the July issue of the UK dance magazine Mixmag, he simply says, "Excuse me? I'm into the music, not the technology."

Long out of print and in much need of a repress, Mike Paradinas was on top form for this classic album that's at long last available again through Rephlex.
This teaser 12” on TMT brings together 2 remixes from Mike Paradinas and a remix each from Bix and Traktor.
I actually always preferred the more toned down tracks here, the melodies offering ample room for Paradinas to display his unquestioned ear for a melody.

 µ-Ziq: Royal Astronomy: Pitchfork Review
It's sad to see an artist as obviously talented as Paradinas release an album that sounds like it took a weekend to record.
It was to be the opening track in his final opus, Royal Astronomy, and it sounded great with those out- of- control skittering, jazz breaks.
But listening to this record in contrast to the sensory overload of 1997's Lunatic Harness, and even his earlier work on albums like Bluff Limbo and In Pine Effect, it's clear that something snapped in the ambition department of Paradinas' neural net.

Blending stark electronic soundscapes, hip-hop or jazzy influences and stunning melodies, Paradinas has carved a special place for himself, and this album comprehensively highlights his interesting take on the genre.
Clocking at thirty four tracks spread well over two hours, "Meast" is somewhat more disparate than what we are used to from Mike Paradinas, lacking some of the focus of records such as "Tango N’ Vectif" or "In Pine Effect".

Paradinas manages to coax a lot of music out of his samples, and by combining hyperactive rhythms with mournful keyboard textures and expansive arrangements, he allows the songs to bounce in and out of widely varied tempos.
With LUNATIC HARNESS, Mike Paradinas, or Mu-Ziq, lives up to every bit of the superlative praise he has received, and manages to take a genre which thrives on rapid change and give it a powerful shove into the future.
Paradinas offers up fractured rhythmic structures and lush keyboard pads atop an unrelenting barrage of stuttering, tripping, manic breakbeat drum samples (as best displayed on the title track).

RollingStone.com: Mu-Ziq Music, Biography, Influences, Followers, Related Projects, Contemporaries
Early albums like Tango N'Vectif deftly juxtaposed harsh mechanical beats with quirky, circular melodies, while later records under aliases like Kid Spatula and Jake Slazenger delved further afield into Soul Jazz, easy listening, Electro and Jungle.
Although the genre-hopping diversity of his early work has become more smoothly integrated with each album, it is this playful aspect of his experimentation that has continued to set his work apart.
Unlike many of his contemporaries, Paradinas approaches his sonic bricolage with a tongue-in-cheek attitude, injecting an air of whimsy into what is often a stiflingly po-faced style.
