 Michael Ray Charles text
Michael Ray Charles is familiar with the power of images, not only with the images he creates but also with the those that persist in our collective conscience.
But what is especially appealing about rap for Charles is the melding of historical forms of "black" music, such as rhythm and blues, funk, and gospel, with contemporary lyrics and instruments.
Charles has found his tent can comfortably embrace and refer to roles for black sports figures, musical artists, examples of the artificial "white" mold for the beautiful leading lady, as well as the "darker" side of unrepressed strength and physical power of his young, strong men.

Michael Ray Charles was born in 1967 in Lafayette, Louisiana, and graduated from McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana, in 1985.
Charles draws comparisons between Sambo, Mammy, and minstrel images of an earlier era and contemporary mass-media portrayals of black youths, celebrities, and athletes—images he sees as a constant in the American subconscious.
But there’s a difference between these images and real humans.” In each of his paintings, notions of beauty, ugliness, nostalgia, and violence emerge and converge, reminding us that we cannot divorce ourselves from a past that has led us to where we are, who we have become, and how we are portrayed.

 Barnes & Noble.com - Ray
The film doesn’t simply present the hit songs and other professional triumphs, although those are extremely well represented; it delves into the psyche of Ray Charles Robinson, whose destiny was shaped by back-to-back childhood traumas: his brother’s accidental death by drowning, which Ray witnessed; and his sudden descent into blindness a few years later.
One of America’s best-loved musicians, the late Ray Charles deserved a big-screen biography that did justice to his incredible life and career -- and he got it, thanks to director Taylor Hackford and star Jamie Foxx.
If you do not watch this movie to see a wonderfully portrayed history of one of America's most influential musicians, watch it to hear some of the finest music you will ever hear.
