 Martin Taylor reviews
Taylor is a gifted musician who has taken the artistry of guitar playing to a new level---for those who think good guitar work has to be full of solos screeching at the speed of light, Taylor proves that it's what you leave out that matters.
Martin Taylor's solo jazz guitar excursion is fairly clean and subtle.
The simplicity of this album is what gives it an overall clean and elegant feel.

Martin Taylor - biography - english - Hopper Management
"Portraits", Martin's sixth album for Linn Records was recorded in Nashville, Hamburg and Scotland and although primarily a solo album it featured three guitar duet tracks with his friend Chet Atkins.
His latest video "Martin Taylor in Concert", which was recorded live at the Craftsmans Guild theatre in Pittsburg was produced for the US company Guitar Workshop.
Their first album "Spirit of Django", reached No. 1 in the UK Jazz Charts for several weeks and was nominated "Best Album of the Year 1995" at the British Jazz Awards.

Martin has been hard at work producing the new CD, Sit Down and Sing, which is folk singer, Roy Bailey's first full length CD since his original decision to take early retirement from recording.
Martin has recently recorded sessions with Cara Dillon and with Steve Tilston for their new CDs.
Martin's absolutely favourite guitars are made by Stefan Sobell.

Martin Taylor's Spirit Of Django - Hopper Management
Martin Taylor first came to prominence in the late 70's through his musical collaborations with violin legend Stephane Grappelli.
The American magazine Acoustic GuitarTM recently described Martin Taylor as "THE acoustic guitarist of his generation" and being voted "Best Guitarist" in the British Jazz Awards for the seventh year running.
Their latest album Celebrating Grappelli - which features Stephane Grappelli on six of the tracks, is currently enjoying great success in America where it has been at the top of the Gavin Jazz Charts for over a month while being the most played jazz record on U.S. radio.

 Solo by Martin Taylor
Martin Taylor's phenomenal technique is best enjoyed on his unaccompanied recordings, such as this studio date recorded in 2002 for P3 Music.

 Martin Taylor
On the album ÒPortraitsÓ he collaborated with another legend, guitarist Chet Atkins on some memorable tracks about which Atkins said Ò"Martin Taylor is one of the greatest and most impressive guitar players in the world.
Martin also played on two Grisman recording projects, Dawg Grass/Dawg Jazz and Acoustic Christmas.
In 1980, Martin met David Grisman and the two became fast friends touring in the company of the great violin maestro.

 Minor 7th Interviews Martin Taylor
Taylor has recorded many solo albums, most of which are available through his own company, P3 Music.
Taylor has juggled many other musical partnerships throughout his career, including stints with Barney Kessel and Charlie Byrd in the Great Guitars, David Grisman, and as a member of Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings, a rock and roll revue in which he shared guitar duties with Albert Lee.
Taylor organized the annual Kirkmichael Guitar Festival and has donated guitars to students near his home in Scotland.

 Martin Taylor - Jazz Guitarist
Martin Taylor is recognized as one of jazz music's most gifted guitarists having garnered critical acclaim for his previous solo releases and collaborations with Stephane Grappelli and David Grisman.
The tracks on the album range from the funky, romantic cover (and 1st single) "Midnight At The Oasis" to the smooth version of "The Odd Couple" and the passionate title track, with many moving journeys in between.
He has won Best British Jazz Artist seven years in a row and took home the Best Jazz Album of the Year at the 1995 British Jazz Awards for his "Spirit Of Django" release.

 Martin Taylor Artistry
Martin was impressed with the acoustic tonal qualities of Mike’s Mimesis pick-up range (now Fishman Rare Earth) and Mike set to work to produce an innovative system for the arch-top guitar.
For ease of playing, Martin wanted an instrument with a 15" body, but without sacrificing acoustic performance, equally suitable for fingerstyle or for using a pick.
So it should come as no surprise that Martin Taylor, jazz guitar virtuoso, has teamd up with Mike on an exciting new venture.

 Guardian Martin Taylor
The most touchingly eloquent piece was How Are Things in Gloca Morra, a heartfelt dedication to Taylor's father: full of tremors and shimmers in the intonation, and unexpectedly winding up close to abstraction as Taylor detuned the guitar on the resolving notes.
But his current tour to launch a new CD (Solo, on the p3 label) finds Taylor playing a lot of swing and standards, and, as usual, getting guitar buffs from every genre craning their necks to try to see how he can possibly do it.
Recently he has spent a good deal of time exploring the more rock, funk and country-angled aspects of guitar playing in a somewhat smooth-jazzy manner.

 Slashdot Microsoft's Martin Taylor Responds
I thought Taylor sounded open-minded and willing to listen and learn, not just launch missiles of Redmond rhetoric.
Martin: About midnight last night I was anxiously reading Slashdot.
I don't look at it saying, "Hey, are there great open source projects that are available on Windows?" I think, let me try to paraphrase it and answer it.

Martin Taylor - Nitelife in Charts Music
The one thing that lets it down is that Taylor, who avoids blatant cliché in every other aspect of the record, hires a saxophonist, Kirk Whalum, who does nothing but ape Turrentine and Washington at their most obvious.
Nitelife, Taylor's second album for Sony, leans more heavily than the first on the Wes Montgomery-cum-George Benson derived smooth-jazz angle, but his commitment to quality, in whatever field he plays, remains intact.
Some may question the low flame apparent in the often heavily sequenced tracks, most of which suffer from undistinguished melodies but which are given sophisticated arrangements.

 Martin Taylor In Concert
Purchasers of this album will be just as entertained as they were.
One of the highlight tracks is Taylor's poignant offering of Benny Golson's paean to Clifford Brown, “I Remember Clifford”.
Respect for melody does not inhibit Taylor's urge to improvise.

 Artistry Martin Taylor
Taylor has his guitar pickup wired in stereo (3 strings to one side and three to the other) so that this recording sounds at times very much like TWO great guitarist playing together.
I thought it was someone goofing with the name (Martin; Taylor - both high-end acoustic guitar companies).
Comment: I first heard Taylor on a Dave Grisman Christmas record (1982) doing an acoustic guitar solo on The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting...).

 Martin Taylor Nitelife
Martin Taylor's new look, while not his best perspective, gives the world a contemporary nightlife sound bite for the ages.
After touring and recording with Stéphane Grappelli throughout the 1980s, and then recording seven superior, straight-ahead albums in the 1990s for the Linn label, Martin Taylor has made a radical change of direction.
Taylor's expressive guitar stands back much of the time and allows the surrounding factors to overcome.

 Martin4
His 'Spirit of Django' project in the mid 90's paid homage to the gypsy guitar genius Django Reinhardt and the album named after the project reached No 1 in the UK Jazz Charts for several weeks, and Martin was votewwwwwd BEST GUITARIST for the seventh time in the British Jazz Awards.
Mostly they performed solo numbers, each one's choice spurring the other on to find something that contrasted, but each showcasing unique talents that worked so well together you wondered why this was the first time they've ever performed live on the same stage.

 Guardian Martin Taylor
Landsberger shaped his solos gracefully (often between streaming treble figures and bulky, stamping chords), Taylor's romantic-rhapsody style was sinewy in a song written for Dolly Parton, and a flat-out swinger brought gleeful improvisations from all three.
The guitarist's own composition, dedicated to Reinhardt's favourite cafe, had more of a late-era Wes Montgomery smoothness, but Taylor kept the risk element up with fierce double-time fills and asides flipped off the back of the melody.
He has travelled in the wake of his hero Django Reinhardt by working for years with Reinhardt's celebrated violin partner, Stephane Grappelli.

So as not to compromise the acoustic performance and to keep weight to a minimum there are no rib-mounted pre-amps, therefore no extra holes in the guitar other than for the end-pin socket.

 Biography - Martin Taylor
at The Doghouse in Nashville, Tennessee, with producer Steve Buckingham (who produced Taylor’s Sony cds, ‘Kiss And Tell’ and ‘Nightlife’), ‘SOLO’ features Martin at his astonishing best on fourteen tracks played, as the title suggests, completely solo.
MARTIN TAYLOR, who was recently awarded an MBE for his services to jazz, has been famously dubbed ‘the finest British jazz guitarist of his generation’ by the Times and continues to dazzle audiences around the world with his virtuoso live performances.
Taylor has returned to what he does best: jazzy solo playing in an astonishingly multi-linear manner, like three guitarists playing at once.
