Marillion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Marillion are a British Rock group formed in Aylesbury in 1979, whose 13 studio album career is generally regarded as comprising of two distinct eras, delineated by the departure of original frontman Fish in late 1988 after their first 4 albums and the subsequent arrival of replacement Steve Hogarth in early 1989.
Marillion then released their first live album in November 1984 featuring songs from Fugazi, Script for a Jester's Tear and Cinderella Search (B-side to Assassing) recorded in March and July 1984.
Marillion are currently recording new material with engineer Michael Hunter for their upcoming fourteenth studio album due out in late 2006 or early 2007.

Marillion: Doing Business With Their Fans
A Marillion album is not just a dozen pop songs, all sounding similar to the single.
They premiered new material, played their top 10 songs of all time as chosen by the fans, and did a band swap, where musically inclined fans replaced one of the band on stage to play a song to an audience of thousands.
Both Marillion as a unit with their new singer, and their old singer Fish, relaunching himself as a solo act, were now two pieces of EMI property.

Marillion claims that their new album is extremely different from their other stuff.
After all, it is the music that counts, it's the music that (largely) makes the band, and in the case of Marillion it is definitely the music that turns (turned) people into fans.
Lyrically this is also a very strong song, this is vintage Marillion, undoubtedly the best song on the album.

marillion.com BAND - Biography The Official Marillion Website
The release of the album ‘Marillion.com’ in 1999 flagged their newly launched web-site and record label but it was the revolutionary concept of asking their fans to pre-order and pay for the recording costs an album some 12 months in advance of its release that hit the headlines in 2001.
Marillion first appeared in a recognisable form in early 1982, when the line-up of Fish (vocals), Steve Rothery (guitar), Mark Kelly (keyboards), Pete Trewavas (bass) and Mick Pointer (drummer) began exhaustively touring around the Aylesbury and London area.
By 1997, Marillion had realised that the Internet provided an ideal opportunity to nurture a closer contact with the fans, and a fan instigated whip round on their e-mailing list produced enough funds to allow the band to tour the USA.

Hogarth has performed on nine Marillion albums, five more than Fish, and says that their most memorable chart hit, Kayleigh, is just "ancient history".
Instead of supporting the band through album and ticket sales, Marillion's fans are now literally sponsoring their existence.

Marillion's record label, EMI, gave the band a higher budget for the next album and the result of 15 months labor was Brave, a concept album that mixed classic symphonic progressive rock with standard rock.
Marillion issued their debut album, Script for a Jester's Tear, in 1983, and on the strength of a relentless touring schedule they won a loyal following.
Initially, Marillion were comprised of guitarist Steve Rothery, bassist Doug Irvine, keyboardist Brian Jelliman, and drummer Mick Pointer, but after recording "The Web," an instrumental demo, they recruited vocalist Fish (born Derek Dick) and bassist Diz Minnitt.

Marillion gave a good show, which is what we have come to expect from a band with twenty years worth of experience in the music business, but it wasn't particularly special like on many other occasions.
The familiar Easter (Marillion plays this song during virtually every concert) closed the concert, and was the last chance for the audience to showcase *their* vocal talents!
This track from the 1989 album of the same name epitomizes much of what Marillion is about.

TWAS 93: Magnum, Marillion, Nirvana, XTC
Marillion live recordings have the same odd characteristic as Rush concert albums, I think, which is that the band is so tight and polished, and maniacal about their production quality, that the differences between the live versions of their songs and the studio versions are not always detectable by the untrained observer.
This makes their live albums largely of potential interest to only the extremely devoted, who will have seen the band live and thus treasure the record as a reified memory of the experience, and to the totally uninitiated, for whom they could serve as anthologies.
The stylistic jump from Marillion to Nirvana crosses quite a chasm, my only feeble segue being that both are live albums.

Together with a 'freer' guitar sound, this sounded less contrived to be a hit single, and more like a Marillion song.
Rob and Liz, who have attended several Marillion concerts, didn't rate this one especially highly, but I suspect that was partly due to their preconceptions of how a Marillion concert should 'feel' and the reduced novelty of having seen some of these songs performed live before.
Though I'm very familiar with all of their official albums and have heard over sixty unofficial concert recordings (not bootlegs!), this was the first time I'd seen Marillion live, in person, so I was understandably excited.

When Marillion asked, the fans answered, and the band had the opportunity to make the album their way, without worrying about a record label's interference or infulence.
