 Music Life is sweeter?
After seven years without releasing an album, former Lone Justice frontwoman Maria McKee has broken her silence with High Dive (Viewfinder), her fourth solo effort and a laid-back retreat from the complex and heavily produced sound of 1996’s Life Is Sweet (Geffen).
McKee’s latest career moves seem a lot like the ones Aimee Mann made when she parted ways with Geffen.

 TrouserPress.com :: Maria McKee
Maria McKee's voice and songwriting are stronger and more mature on her first solo album than they ever were in Lone Justice, the Los Angeles country-rock group that made its second and final album in 1986.
Like much of this amazing, unexpected album, McKee splits her convictions between the music and the words, sinning and saving herself in a fission explosion that blasts into the spirit of rock'n'roll.
But her lyrics don't reveal any clear artistic mission and Mitchell Froom's overstylized production (the strings and horns are a bit much) drowns and/or drains her personality out of the album, leaving characterless elegance instead of a strong statement.

McKee, though, has contributed a number of songs to film soundtracks (“Days of Thunder,” “Pulp Fiction,” “Song Catcher”), and the financial benefits have allowed her to create new music at her own pace.
McKee wrote many of the songs while living on a friend’s farm in Ireland, and recorded most of them at home in Los Angeles, with Akin in charge and the two of them playing most of the instruments.
It’s a bleak album lyrically, in contrast to the often exuberant music, with a new maturity and gravitas, where before there was mostly unbridled power and youthful energy.

Maria McKee’s first studio album in seven years is also her first release on her own label.
McKee's singing was one of the musical high points of the 1980's.

McKee's High Dive is simply an awe-inspiring album and easily her finest recorded moment.
In 1996, when Life Is Sweet was released, McKee had left behind the country-rock that had established her for a raucous and wooly aggressive rock sound where she played all the guitars -- in overdrive.

Country Standard Time: Maria McKee in concert, Jan. 12, 2002
WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA Maria McKee sounds like a dramatic Broadway baby on her newly released "High Dive" album, and while that recorded move doesn't make for a comfortable repertoire/artist fit, the singer/songwriter appeared to be perfectly at ease on this second evening of her two-night Sunset Strip club stand.
McKee opened up with her cover of the Goffin/King "I Can't Make It Alone," which filled this club with the twang-y musical goodness we've grown to love hearing from this Southern California native.
McKee alternated back and forth between playing guitar, and sitting at the piano.

Maria McKee: Powerful Voice, Personal Words
Backed by a three-piece rock unit, McKee played acoustic guitar and some electric piano on "Peddlin' Dreams," "Am I the Only One (Who's Ever Felt This Way)," "The Horse Life" and others, using her octave-climbing voice to call attention to the urgency of the lyrics.
As the evening's opener, the singer-songwriter Rose was a fine choice as she played a set of country-tinged folk that showcased her own distinctive vocal abilities.
Tuesday night at Iota, McKee demonstrated once again the vocal power and intensely personal songwriting that keeps her fans enthralled.

Maria McKee comes up with another slowie, which is a bit of a shame, since she does the high-stepping stuff quite brilliantly.
McKee lets her lungs fill with tears, Youth lets the brazen wank-off guitars fly into the firmament, and members of Primal Scream and James are let into the studio to get in on the act.

Country Standard Time: CD Review: Maria McKee
This sixth Maria McKee solo CD may not be a whole lot like the cow-punk celebration that ran through her initial work when fronting the LA band Lone Justice, nor is it quite as Americana-centered as the singer's earlier solo releases.
McKee will never again be the wide-eyed girl in love with depression era fashions and vintage Dolly Parton records that she once was.
Produced by her bassist and husband Jim Akin, McKee's voice is looser here, and her songs are far less dramatic this time out.

Crazewire: Maria McKee has the best voice you've never heard
Most notably is the opening track "To the Open Spaces," where McKee belts it out like she's been holding it in for the full seven years since her last album.
During the course of her solo career, McKee put out a smashingly good disc of heartache (1997's You Gotta Sin To Get Saved) and penned/sung one of the Pulp Fiction Soundtrack's greatest songs, "If Love Wears A Red Dress (Then Hang Me In Rags)." Even with all this behind her, McKee remains largely unknown.

Embracing string arrangements and horns for several of the tracks, McKee produces something almost conceptual that complements her creative muse.
