Pentatonic scale - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The pentatonic scales used in Indonesian gamelan music are called slendro and pelog.
The major pentatonic scale is the basic scale of the music of China; the minor pentatonic is used in Appalachian folk music.
Pentatonic scales are very common and are found all over the world, including but not limited to the tuning of the Ethiopian krar and the Indonesian gamelan, the melodies of African-American spirituals, Celtic folk music and the music of French composer Claude Debussy.

Major scale - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In music theory, the major scale (or major mode) is one of the diatonic scales.
The major scale has seven notes (plus the inclusion of the tonic of the next scale to complete an octave, in practice), which in solfege are the syllables "Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti (and Do)." At the piano keyboard, the simplest major scale is C major (see figure 1).
It is unique in that it is the only major scale to not use sharps or flats on the musical staff and, likewise, only the white notes on the keyboard.

 Major Scale - Guitar
Musical Scales are used in the music of most cultures.
After all of those major scales have been demonstrated, the truth is the major on guitar is not played on a single string in most circumstances.
The multi-string version is the more common approach to scale playing, however you shouldn't overlook the unique tone quality achieved by playing a scale or melodic passage entirely on a single string.

 The Diatonic Scales
The seven modes of the diatonic scale (Lydian, Ionian, Mixolydian, Dorian, Aeolian, Phrygian and Locrian) were (with the exception of the Locrian) widely used in the pretonal Western music of the Middle Ages.
The modes of the diatonic scale are most commonly found in medieval music and folk music, so using them can suggest a somewhat "ancient" quality.
The diatonic scale is therefore an ideal resource for both melodic and harmonic music - it has lots of consonant triads, it has few dissonant intervals, and it is melodically smooth with just two consecutive-step sizes.

Major Scale of Musick by David Cherubim
A scale is a ladder or succession of tones (or notes), starting from the keynote or tonic (the first tone on which it starts), and ending with the octave (the last tone, or tone on which it ends).
The Major Triad of Musick (chord of three tones) is made up of the fundamental or root, major third and perfect fifth from the Major Scale (it is a chain of two thirds or two superimposed intervals of a third).
This will make learning the other scales (like the natural, harmonic and melodic minor scales) and the other modes (modes are rearrangements of the Major Scale or Ionian Mode) easier to learn and master on the guitar.

Lesson 6: The Major Scale (Part 4) and the Circle of 5ths
G major is up a perfect 5th from C. (G is the 5th note of a C major scale.) G major has one accidental in its key signature, an F#.
Keep moving clockwise and we arrive at the key of D major which is also up a perfect 5th from G. (D is the 5th note of a G major scale.) D major has 2 accidentals in its key signature, an F# and a C#.
A key is simply a scale that creates a basis (or ingredients) for a tonal center for a piece of music.

 Major Keys and Scales
Major scales all follow the same interval pattern.
The simple, sing-along, nursery rhymes and folk songs we learn as children, the cheerful, toe-tapping pop and rock we dance to, the uplifting sounds of a symphony: most music in a major key has a bright sound that people often describe as cheerful, inspiring, exciting, or just plain fun.
The music may look quite different, but the only difference when you listen is that one sounds higher than the other.

The Major Scale has the interval structure W,W,H,W,W,W,H. The MODES of the Major scale have different interval patterns created by shifting this.

For instance Dorian has the interval pattern W,H,W,W,W,H,W. Modes are note considered THE or A Major Scale modes have the QUALITY of being Major Minor Diminished etc.

 Modes
Modes (scales) are patterns of notes that move by half-steps (2 notes next to one another on the piano) and whole-steps (2 notes separated by a note on the piano).
Composers use this mode when they want their music to sound Oriental.
This mode sounds almost the same as the major scale.

This is called the natural minor [Apel 1961 p.262] Other minor scales are a formed by using more notes from the major scale: The notes from the chords Cm, Fm, G give the harmonic minor, and using the notes from Cm, F, G when ascending, and Cm, Fm, Gm when descending, gives the melodic minor.
In this discussion, which is still evolving, I hope to explore what principles lie behind the construction of the standard Western musical scales and the music that is based upon them.
Remark: This is what we propose as the basic definition of a musical scale.

With few exceptions, a piece of music, or a section of a piece of music, is said to be in "C Major" when most and sometimes all of the notes are contained in (from) a C Major scale.
Often, most of the notes in a piece of music are better described as being from some other scale.
The scale begins and ends on G. There is one pitch between each note except for B to C and F# to G. B is the third note in the scale, C is the fourth; F# is the 7th note in the scale and G is the Eighth.
