Maggot Brain - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Maggot Brain is a 1971 (see 1971 in music) album by the American funk band Funkadelic.
This is the definitive album of the Eddie Hazel-era of Funkadelic, and one of the most influential albums in funk-metal, and rock and roll in general.
In the grand scheme of things, Maggot Brain is a mode of being, thinking and existing, in which one transcends the troubles of Earthly existence by revelling in the freedom of Funk.

George put the band low in the mix on the final master and so we have included as a bonus track the 1987 remix of 'Maggot Brain' taken from the original multi-tracks where the whole band's playing is audible.
"Maggot Brain" saw a drop off in chart positions for Funkadelic, with the album peaking at #14 on the R&B charts, though it spent longer than "Free Your Mind And Your Ass Will Follow" on those charts.
Within weeks of the release of "Maggot Brain" drummer Tiki Fulwood, responsible for the irresistible groove that underpinned the group even on their wildest flights of fancy, had left and been replaced by Tyrone Lampkin.

Perhaps one of the darker albums of the early 1970s, Maggot Brain is a successful experiment and a tremendous success for Funkadelic's 3rd album.
On itunes, it comes with two versions of maggot brain plus all the other stuff on the album, and I have to say, even being a huge hendrix fan that the guitar solo in maggot brain might actually beat alot of hendrix's stuff.
Rarely, if not never, does P-Funk play a concert without Maggot Brain; it is one of their hallmark songs.

Maggot Brain is one of my favourite tracks of all time, but after listening to this I'm not sure which version I like best.
Maggot Brain is one of Funkadelic's three best albums of the pre-Warner era (along with Funkadelic and Standing on the Verge).
This loses the 'Mother Earth is pregnant for the first time...' bit at the start, but includes the rest of the band in a less scary but perhaps more rounded tune, with more prominent drums and ?kalimba.

Funkadelic: Funkadelic / Free Your Mind / Maggot Brain / America Eats Its Young: Pitchfork Review
Maggot Brain was an explosive record, bursting at the seams with exactly the kind of larger than life sound a band called Funkadelic should have made.
The bonus track "Fish, Chips and Sweat" is again reminiscent of Sly, but in his "Dance to the Music" guise, and is suitably celebratory, even as the mix distorts the tape.
However, it's hard to hear "We Hurt Too" (a maudlin ballad about the hidden tenderness of men) as anything but a joke, and the title track, similar to Maggot Brain's title cut, is a bit heavy on the huffing and panting.

Detailed info on Funkadelic's _Maggot Brain_
"Maggot Brain" is the greatest instrumental the band ever recorded, owing everything to the genius of Eddie Hazel, who makes listening to the piece an exhausting, terryifying and exhilarating experience.
TT: "Maggot Brain" was recorded in one take.
This kind of heavy eclecticism would be seen on several of the next Funkadelic albums, but this one is my favorite.

Blogcritics.org: CD Review: Maggot Brain by Funkadelic
Maggot Brain from 1971 is definitely the entry point to the world of George Clinton for rock guitar fans.
Plus, "Maggot Brain" is a more impressive act of guitar expression than about anything by Jim Hendrix- and Hendrix was, you know, pretty handy with a guitar.
For another frame of reference, the guitar sounds like a stylistic ancestor to the song "Purple Rain." Now, Prince did some fine guitar playing on that track, but this is ten times stronger guitar medicine- yet considerably more subdued in the effect.

Maggot Brain is THE BEST SOLO I have ever heard, better than any of (dare I say it?) Hendrix's work.
Firstly, the highlight of this album is it's title track.
Comment: that dude knew exactly what he was talking about, and i got put on to this album way before i started smoking(first heard my father''s band play Maggotbrain when i was like 12.) and i still felt like i was high lol.

 Gedup.com - Reviews - Funkadelic / Maggot brain
If for nothing else (and there is plenty more), Maggot Brain, Funkadelic's third slab of weirdness, deserves our adulation for the song that forever enshrined the name of Eddie Hazel: the title track.
You leave the track feeling as emotionally drained as he no doubt was.
An all-time classic album, in the annals of funk, rock, whatever.

Disc of the Week (7/24/2000): Funkadelic: Maggot Brain
George Clinton didn't know a thing about producing a record when they created Funkadelic; with Free Your Mind..., the whole thing was recorded in a single day (and from the sound of it, in a single take).
So let's start off with some extremely obvious praise: the title track.
Maggot Brain is so bleak it's beautiful and so brash it's bracing.

Still, this is a tiny complaint to lodge about an album that is, in every single way, a celebration of all things soulful, funky and mind-expanding about music.
You could only listen to Black Sabbath's "Master Of Reality", T. Rex and Hawkwind bootlegs so many times before you yearned for something even more grandiose, something that aspired to even greater heights of drug-induced depravity.
How on earth I had neglected Funkadelic up to this point was flabbergasting, considering my love for bands like Faith No More, Bad Brains, Living Colour, Primus and Fishbone, all of whom clearly owed a tremendous debt to Clinton's troupe of miscreants.

Funkadelic: Maggot Brain ---Ink Blot Magazine
The story on Maggot Brain is that George Clinton, out of his mind on Yellow Sunshine, told Hazel to play the first half of the song as if he had just heard that his own mother was dead, and then the second half as if he had found out she was alive.
The result is beyond "astonishing" or "powerful" or anything else critics usually say; it's an improvised composition, of both deep blues purity and cold, hard, futuristic vision.
Sorry to play the race card, but it MUST be true.

Las Vegas Mercury: Replay: Funkadelic, Maggot Brain, 1971
There's a similar desperation in guitarist Eddie Hazel's 10-minute solo on the album's title track--a fact that has long been attributed to the fact that Clinton told Hazel to "play like your momma just died" before recording the jam.
Although Clinton denies the connection, some rock historians have suggested that the album's title was inspired by his dead brother, who Clinton allegedly discovered with his head cracked open in a Chicago apartment.
Arguably Clinton's most ambitious recording, Maggot Brain blends funk, soul, psychedelic rock, country gospel and blues boogie into an otherworldly burgoo--in the process, answering his famous query: "Who says a funk band can't rock?" More than any of his contemporaries--Sly Stone and Isaac Hayes, in particular--Clinton straddled funk and rock like a dreadlocked colossus.
