George Graham Reviews Maddy Prior's "Flesh & Blood"
Prior's vocal virtually glows, the quality of the song weakens the track.
But this album is a departure from the guitar based sound of Steeleye.
Prior's voice is the focus, and she is in exceptionally good farm, delivering her the songs in her ageless style that evokes ancient images while sounding surprisingly contemporary with the electronic instrumentation and some songs even showing a bit of pop influence.

Maddy Prior - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Maddy Prior was on all the Steeleye Span albums from Hark!
Although best known as the powerful soprano in Steeleye Span, Maddy has recorded session work, albums of her own songs and eclectic styles from medieval, through folk-rock, prog-rock and traditional songs.
On recent albums Troy Donockley has been a co-producer.

 Ectophiles' Guide - Maddy Prior
Maddy Prior has an unusual, unmistakable voice which is wonderfully suited to the laments and joys of traditional and traditional-sounding music.
This is collection of mostly traditional songs and songs based on traditional tropes by Prior and her husband, Rick Kemp.
But what struck me was the remarkable similarity of the opening strains of track 5: "Long Shadows" to Loreena McKennitt 's "Dark Night of the Soul." I played them together several times and it is either an amazing coincidence, or Loreena (or possibly celloist George Kholler) heard Maddy's song and subconsciously incorporated it within.

 Maddy Prior, Ravenchild
The drumbeats to "Twankydillo," a song that Prior says she has known for years and believes "comes from the singing of the Copper Family of Sussex," is the first track.
Now, I suppose I should pause and state my usual Maddy Prior disclaimer: I probably could be happy listening to her sing "Mary Had a Little Lamb" a capella thirty-seven times in a row because I know that her voice would add emotions to that nursery rhyme that I'd not noticed previously.
I have seen Prior perform this material live and realize that once her emotional facial and body language is added to the mix, all of the songs grow in strength -- the "lesser" songs become fuller, and the already-strong pieces simply take off.

 Maddy Prior
Maddy Prior has produced one of the most outstanding and varied bodies of work in the field of British folk music: still in love with her medium, still pushing at the boundaries, still fascinated by the possibilities that music has to offer.
Maddy closed the year with another tour with the Carnival Band, and another new album.
While Steeleye continued to explore traditional material, Maddy used her albums to develop her own songwriting, despite claiming to be in awe of the craft.

George Graham Revues Maddy Prior's "Ravenchild"
Prior's recent solo recordings, the songs in the suite flow from one to another, and most have instrumental interludes that provide the transitions.
Prior gives the song the melancholy mood its lyrics imply.

Maddy Prior & the Carnival Band
A performance by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band is not simply a musical gig; it's an education unto itself.
It might have seemed disconcerting to listen to Christmas songs on the first night of Chanukah, but the joy expressed via Prior and band through their voices and instruments was appropriate for any holiday.
It was followed by the final number, the first song Prior ever sang with the Carnival Band, "Angels from the Realms of Glory," a faster and higher version than any she'd known before, and it also came to them via Mississippi.

Maddy Prior Discography: Slipcue.Com Folk Guide
Maddy Prior and June Tabor's voices and musical sensibilities are a perfect match, and the material they chose is also a delight.
There are several glorious songs on here, including the playful, bawdy "Three Drunken Maidens" and "Bring Us In Good Ale." Prior's vocals on "I Live Not Where I Love" are every bit as haunting as the song itself, and the rest of this album is quite fine as well.
These days Prior is largely a member emeritus of the Steeleye clan, mostly recording solo material on her own Park Records label.

Maddy Prior : Queer Pop Culture
I was lucky to have seen Maddy Prior and "the girls" in Leuven, Belgium at a folk music festival, and I fell in love with their music.

 CMT.com : Maddy Prior : Biography
Prior continued to record more frequently alone, including the albums Year, Flesh and Blood, and Ravenchild, many of which were concept records, before finally leaving Steeleye Span in 2000 to concentrate purely on solo work.
Maddy Prior has established herself, by dint of both talent and time, as one of the leading female singers in British folk (and folk-rock).
In 1976, she teamed with another young folk singer, June Tabor, under the Silly Sisters moniker, to record the first of what would be two albums, also remaining with Steeleye until the group officially disbanded in 1978.

Steeleye Span / Maddy Prior: Saucy Sailor
Maddy Prior recorded this song in 1993 for her solo album Year.
Recorded by Steeleye Span for the album Below the Salt (with Maddy Prior, vocals; Tim Hart, acoustic guitar, vocals; Rick Kemp, bass; Bob Johnson, guitar; Peter Knight, piano), this song appeared in 1978 as B-side of the single Rag Doll.
Saucy Sailor is a wonderful song to sing and I've sung it for many years with Steeleye and it is delightfully comfortable.

Maddy Prior, Memento - The Best of Maddy Prior
Prior has a distinctive and strong voice, delivering her lyrics in a deep and meaningful way - this is a disc one could lose oneself in for a very long time.
If you've not yet had the chance to listen to the wonders Prior shares on this CD, I'd suggest you do.
Between her solo career, Steeleye Span, The Carnival Band, and her family, Prior was overworked and it was time to begin making decisions.

Prior remains one of the most diverse characters on the folk scene both as a solo artist and with the excellent Carnival Band.
Prior announced she was finally leaving Steeleye Span in July of the same year.

 Maddy Prior, Arthur The King
Whilst I imagine that this fine disk will be labeled as "contemporary folk," it's difficult to picture any of these songs being played in a folk club by one person with an acoustic guitar.
Modern technology is necessary in order to present these songs in their full majesty, and we are all the richer for Maddy and her merry men having done so.
The second half of the disk is composed of four traditional songs and one written by Maddy and Troy.

Living Tradition CD review of The Best Of Maddy Prior - Memento
The album "Memento" is subtitled "The Best of Maddy Prior".
The best of Maddy Prior would have to include some of the classic tracks from her Steeleye Span days and even from the earlier Summer Solstice album which she made with Tim Hart.
But for me the two most successful tracks are the two which are closest to her roots - "Mother and Child" which has clear echoes of "The False Knight on the Road" and "Pater Noster" with its echoes of "Gaudete".

 Steeleye Span Part 1
Prior and Hart were among Britain's best-known folk performers in the late 1960s.
Their first studio album in seven years, Time, shows them to be much like the Steeleye Span of the mid-1970s, committed to combining traditional music with rock and roll in powerful and interesting ways.
"The point we meet at is traditional music," says Prior, the band's long-time singer.

Compare Prices and Read Reviews on Silly Sisters - Maddy Prior/June Tabor at Epinions.com
Unfortunately, Silly Sisters failed to live up to that challenge, for on such songs as "The Burning of Auchindoon", one fails to see much of Prior's sheer touching emotion or the stark beauty Tabor was to make her trademark on such albums as Aqaba.
Silly Sisters was a project done by Steeleye Span lead singer Maddy Prior with newcomer June Tabor after the latter's first serious album Airs And Graces had received excellent reception in the folk world.
A little disappointing, but still shows why Maddy Prior and June Tabor were such fine singers of traditional English folk songs.

Steeleye Span & Maddy Prior, A Rare Collection
The beautiful yet sad traditional song, "I Live Not Where I Love," originally recorded in the studio not by Steeleye, but by Prior and Hart for their 1971 Summer Solstice album, is one of the live offerings.
Fans will enjoy hearing Steeleye's 1973 "The Holly and Ivy," including Christmas greetings (with a lot of laughter and some joking at guitarist and vocalist Tim Hart's expense), originally released as the B-side to "Gaudete." "Stookey," a 1978 British children's television theme song, written and performed by Prior and Kemp, is yet another collector's item.
Are you a fan of Steeleye Span, the pioneering English electric-folk band that until recently featured Maddy Prior's astounding vocals -- you know, the voice that can tell a story just with its change of tone?

 Steeleye Span, Time
Indeed, the vocal harmonies of Maddy Prior and Gay Woods rival even the harmonies created by Maddy Prior and June Tabor on the seminal Silly Sisters albums.
The material this time is both more pagan and darker than on previous albums: age has not made them kinder and gentler folk.
In the meantime, you can enjoy possibly the best Steeleye Span album ever recorded.

Tim Hart and Maddy Prior: Summer Solstice
Prior has continued to perform and record regularly, alternating Steeleye Span reunions with various solo projects, and recording with June Tabor, The Answers, the Carnival Band, and in recent years with husband Rick Kemp.
Meanwhile Tim and Maddy continued to work as a duo, and in the summer of '72 released their highly-rated Summer Solstice LP on which they were helped out by Andy Irvine, Pat Donaldson, John Ryan and Gerry Conway.
Indeed, their finest recorded work together- the magnificent Summer Solstice album - was released in 1972, well after the pair had helped to establish Steeleye Span as the most popular Folk-Rock outfit in the UK.

 Maddy Prior
It's a certain Maddy Prior talking, and It's quite likely you'll know her voice even if you've never followed the career of top folk-rock band Steeleye Span, seeing as how they've just received their first gold record for the album 'All around My Hat'.
One way or another, that leads us back to the Maddy Prior Story, her life and times.
But seriously for moment, Maddy let's have a quick ponder about this folk-rock thing, that's actually had a book and an album devoted to charting its progression already, ('The Electric Muse') it's not even over yet.

Tabor, 56, regarded as one of the folk scene's finest interpreters of the song, is known for her "chamber folk" style and her 1970s collaborations with Steeleye Span's Maddy Prior, recording as the Silly Sisters.
She is especially known for her interpretations of Richard Thompson songs, and counts Elvis Costello among her biggest fans.
Scunthorpe-born guitarist Martin Simpson was named musician of the year, while Show of Hands - acoustic duo Steve Knightley and Phil Beer - were voted best live act.

 Interview With Maddy Prior
Maddy herself always had a number of projects apart from the band: Silly Sisters (with June Tabor), The Carnival Band and the Maddy Prior Band among them.
Now, her most recent solo CD Ravenchild has been issued by Park Records; an enigmatic album with a couple of feature sets of songs on the diverse topics of Napoleon and ravens.
Along with her solo work, she still performs occasionally with the Carnival Band and with ex-members of Steeleye in various combinations, so the pace of her life is probably only slightly less hectic than when she was a full time member of the band.
